Desert Soul Club returns to Palm Springs! This weekly mod/soul/funk dance party brings the true sounds of MOD to the low desert. Manned by DJs Bob Deck and Lee Joseph, the heart and Desert Soul of the club is based on irresistible dance grooves from a universe of 45s released during the r&b, beat, mod, northern soul – heyday of the early to mid-60s, extending through the psychedelic and funk eras of the late ‘60s through the dawn of disco.  Bobby and Lee dig deep into their knowledge and cache of globe-spanning tracks and will feature like-minded guest DJs.

The British-based Mod (shortened from Modernists) subculture, a youth movement that embraced music, fashion, scooters, cinema, and more, played an integral role in shaping popular culture during the mid-20th century. Mods embraced the sound and style of American r&b and soul music.  This love of American soul 45s, with as much respect for non-hit and independently produced records as for hit records from Motown, continued through the 70s and 80s at clubs in the North of England, creating the term “Northern Soul.” To this very day, the music continues to captivate record collectors, DJs and club goers, with mod style nights continuing to flourish in the US and Europe. Desert Soul Club is pleased to bring this music to mid-century centric Palm Springs!

Bob Deck grew up on oldies radio, and as a teen, skateboarded to escape from the post-modern nightmare of his Wichita, Kansas. Bob attended Kansas University in Lawrence where he studied graphic design and was a full-fledged music junkie, sharing his diverse musical discoveries on his “7-inch Show” on college radio station 90.7 KJHK. Upon graduating, he remained in Lawrence, designing album covers, flyers, and posters for many of the bands in the local music scene, playing drums in the garage band The Hefners, and co-publishing a rock’n’roll fanzine called “micromag.” Eventually, his love of modernism and California sunshine led to a move to the mid-century modern mecca of Palm Springs, California, where he is now a full-time Realtor® and DJs vintage music on vinyl.

Lee Joseph is a lifelong music fan, record collector, and pop culture aficionado. As a young child, Lee was obsessed with records.  He spent the early part of his 20s managing an indie record store in Tucson. He moved to Los Angeles to join a band, immerse himself in underground pop culture, scour thrift stores, swap meets, and yard sales for Polynesian pop artifacts, vintage clothing, and, of course, records. In Los Angeles, Lee started the indie label Dionysus Records. He now lives in Joshua Tree, playing bass for Jesika von Rabbit, running a small event PR company called Reverberations Media representing Tiki Oasis, Surf Guitar 101, and artist Frau Sakra, and is heard Wednesdays 5-7 PM Pacific on LuxuriaMusic.com and Monday-Friday 3-7 PM on Z107.7FM Joshua Tree.
