The Surf Guitar 101 Festival & Weekender returns July 31 through August 2 for its 17th year, bringing one of the world’s largest surf music gatherings to a new home in Garden Grove.
The three-day event will take place at the Garden Grove Elks Lodge (11551 Trask Ave.), featuring multiple stages, live bands, DJ sets, artist panels, and specialty events—all celebrating the past, present, and future of surf music.
Founded in 2008 by Orange County native Jeff “Big Tiki Dude” Hanson, the Surf Guitar 101 Festival has grown into a global destination for fans of the reverb-driven sound that originated in Southern California in the early 1960s. The festival now draws international acts and audiences while staying rooted in the region where surf music began.
This year’s lineup includes Los Straitjackets, The Bomboras, Slacktone, The Boss Martians, and dozens more performing across three full days, along with guitar, bass, and drum seminars led by members of Slacktone. The event artwork is by the legendary SHAG, a long time fan and friend of the surf music community
Additional highlights include the Taboo Tiki Room featuring live music and DJs, and the popular Vintage Swimsuit Contest on Sunday afternoon.
Organizers say this year’s move to Garden Grove offers more space and a stronger connection to surf music’s Orange County roots.
