The DJs
Bob Deck aka DJ Bobby California grew up on oldies radio, and as a teenager, skateboarded and listened to punk rock to escape from the post-modern nightmare of his Wichita, Kansas. Bob attended Kansas University in Lawrence, where he studied graphic design and was a full-fledged music junkie, sharing his diverse musical discoveries on his “7-inch Show” on college radio station KJHK. Upon graduating, he remained in Lawrence, designing album covers, flyers and posters for many of the bands in the local music scene, and co-published a music fanzine called “micromag.” Eventually, his love of modernism and California sunshine led to a move to the mid-century modern mecca of Palm Springs, California, where he continues as a freelance graphic designer and DJs under the moniker “Bobby California,” named after a song by Curt Boettcher (The Millennium, Sagittarius).

“DJ Lee” Joseph is a lifelong music fan, record collector and pop culture aficionado. As a young child, Lee was obsessed with records and enamored with tiki and Polynesian pop inspired by the sights, and sounds, at Tucson, Arizona’s Kon Tiki restaurant located in the neighborhood where he grew up. He spent the early part of his 20s managing an indie record store in Tucson then moved to Los Angeles to immerse himself in numerous underground pop culture scenes while playing bass in several groups, scouring thrift stores, swap meets and yard sales for vintage clothing, tiki mugs, and old records. His mid-century centric record label Dionysus Records, is now in its third decade. Currently, Lee also runs a small PR company called Reverberations Media whose clientele includes Tiki Oasis, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, and Designer Con. Lee plays bass for Joshua Tree’s Jesika von Rabbit and also has a weekly show on LuxuriaMusic.com called “Over Under Sideways Down” which airs Monday 8-10 PM PST.

Michelle Bickford grew up with a love of all things Mid-Century-Modern, science fiction art, and soldering irons. Her creations are a merging of those worlds.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” is a collection of imaginary movie stills. Utilizing 3D elements to capture the look and movement of the art and movies I was magnetized to as a kid. Creating a frozen frame from my minds eye, be it action packed, sculptural or just plain silly. – Michelle Bickford

Friday, November 6th marks the opening night celebration of Tiki Farm’s 15th Anniversary, with a comprehensive exhibition of 500 of the most important and coveted selections of their over 2,000 different designs created to-date. Exclusive to the event, La Luz De Jesus will be world-premiering five brand new Tiki Farm limited edition Tiki mugs designed by Big Toe, Doug Horne, Flounder, Ken Ruzic and Michelle Bickford.

LaLuzdeJesusNov2015Tiki Farm is credited as being the world’s largest and most recognized manufacturer of Tiki mugs, having produced millions of mugs over the last 15 years, designed by such notable artists as Shag, The Pizz, Crazy Al Evans, Rick Rietveld and countless others.

Since their inception back in the Fall of 2000, Tiki Farm has placed more mugs on a global basis than any other company and continue to do so at a fevered pace. They have paved the way of the modern day Tiki mug resurgence, defining the movement and creating the head of steam that has allowed so many other Tiki enthusiasts to try their hand at mug making. Tiki Farm’s founder and president, Holden Westland, is well-regarded as “The Hardest Working Man In Tiki”, and the singularly staggering results from his efforts evidenced in Tiki Farm’s continued manic-paced production will be on display for all to enjoy at this special exhibition. Guests will be treated to a free printed show compendium that will allow for an informative and insightful walk-through of this phenomenal display of world-famous Tiki Farm goodies!

Tiki Farm’s client list reads like a whose-who list you’d find in a high-profile business magazine, with their commissioning clients to-date including: Disneyland, Pixar, Mattel, Hard Rock, Trader Vic’s, The Discovery Channel, Fender, Body Glove, Hyatt Regency and literally 1000’s of other commissioning clients.

On display as well will be a tribute display to Tiki Farm’s late Art Director, The Pizz. Dubbed “The Lord Of Lowbrow”, The Pizz played a pivotal role in Tiki Farm’s most recent years, lending his artistic and creative abilities to a massive amount of designs.

This exhibition should not be missed by any fans of the mid-century artistic movement as well of course by any fans of Tiki, Lowbrow Art and Kustom Kulture. “Tiki” is an integral part of these movements, especially here in Southern California, and no other company better exemplifies the passion, commitment and creative breadth that has made Tiki such a household word any better than Southern California’s beloved Tiki Farm.

Tiki Farm’s Holden Westland as well as many of the current artists involved in the Tiki scene will be on hand to celebrate an amazing and unparalleled 15 years of wonderful, mind-boggling Tiki artistry and creativity.

The Standells
The Standells are a cornerstone of 1960s garage with their hits “Dirty Water” and “Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White” But their crowning glory for the L.A. rock n roll scene was their opening scene footage and soundtrack work for the B-movie quasi documentary “Riot on the Sunset Strip”

LOVE Revisited
Love was the biggest, most respected band on the L.A. club scene at the zenith of that creative musical explosion in 1966. For example, even though The Doors had a number one hit record they continued to be the opening band for Love in Los Angeles.

Original lead guitarist Johnny Echols is supported by seasoned Baby Lemonade crew who backed Arthur Lee.

The Loons
Local luminaries The Loons include Mike Stax, former member of The Tell-Tale Hearts and founder of Ugly Things magazine, and Anja, former member of London garage Go Go band The Diaboliks and current member of 60s girl group The Rosalyns. Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker
“Red Tiki Lounge”

Brad Parker paints “Low Brow Art” about Modern Tiki Culture. He does so from the most remote land mass in the world: the Big Island of Hawaii. “When you live on an active volcano, you learn to make sacrifices.” The artist doesn’t mean throwing virgins into the volcano, but rather his move from the fast lane of Hollywood to the slower pace of the small seaside town of Kailua-Kona.

In doing so, Brad quickly became the king of Polynesian Pop Art, and his work is routinely selected by Hawaiian officials to represent Tiki culture to the world. His art is a staple in the surf world, where he’s partnered with Body Glove, and he’s had sell-out exhibitions in Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Dubai.

Parker’s “Red Tiki Lounge” combines the paint stroke of old Flemish masters with counter culture subject matter from a childhood of adoring comic books, cartoons, and Universal monster movies. This show features skate decks, beach towels, pencil sketches and paintings, and we’ll be celebrating July 4th with BBQ and a live band. Brad will be present at his opening reception to sign cards, calendars and prints.

Brad Parker on his involvement in the “Keiki Surf for the Earth Event in Hawaii

During this Keiki Surf for the Earth (beach clean up and surf contest for kids under 14) “Save the “Pine Trees” surf beach spot for puvblic use and not resort development” event I got to meet a really nice old timer…. kind of a wise, respected, Hawaiian elder. Much to my surprise, we got into a a deep metaphysical dialog and discussion about my Tiki-Art, and why I had changed my life and was here, living on the active volcano called the Big Island, and why I was painting such things as “Tikis”. His name is Angel Pilago, he was the Councilman in the Big Island’s North Kona’s District 8 till he retired. Now, he acts in an unofficial, advisory role to such folks as Big Island surfer and Mayor Billy Kenoi and Hawaii Governor Neil Ambercrombie.
