Tiki Oasis 16: Party on Monster Island – Epilogue

toSummer is over, kids are back in school and we’re looking towards Halloween and the holiday season. For the most part, most of us have recovered from our Post-Tiki Oasis Depression what with the event and everything leading up to it ending a bit over a month ago. The memory of what many of us feel is the best weekend of the year carries on via social media, especially on the very lively Tiki Oasis Facebook Group where discussions of previous and future events are an hourly occurrence (if you are posting event photos on socials, please tag them #tikio or @thetikioasis).

Event organizers Otto & Baby Doe would like to thank all the sponsors, advertisers, and vendors that participate in Tiki Oasis; the bands and room party hosts for playing long and hard; the amazing vehicles in the car show; the 170 volunteers; our symposium hosts, our core staff for all the advance planning that makes Tiki Oasis happen with special thanks to our GM Tiki Jim Giddings for keeping it running smoothly; and thank you to all of the guests who have fun and enjoy the party!

What about next year you ask? Tiki Oasis’ 2017 theme is International Espionage and will take place August 10 – 13, 2017 at the Historic Bali Hai Restaurant and Crowne Plaza Hanalei Hotel in San Diego, CA. Stay tuned! www.tikioasis.com

And Now a Word From Our Sponsors!

MrCaliforniaMR. CALIFORNIA
Mr. California is the premier leisurewear label for men who drink whiskey—or, perhaps, mai tais—while smoking a pipe and playing jai alai with likeminded ne’er do wells. Today’s Mr. California apparel retains the timeless qualities that made the label notorious in the ‘60’s, with knit and woven shirts, pants, jackets, pj’s and the proverbial much more. And of course, every Mr. California article is made in California, the Golden State. True to the original, updated to suit today’s handsome gentleman. Mr. California. Classic leisurewear for the modern man. Drink a bunch of Zombies! www.mistercal.com

PUSSERS RUMTO16PussersRum
Pusser’s Rum is a world class, award-winning aged dark rum with a distinctively smooth and well-rounded taste. The blend originates from stills in Trinidad and Guyana and is heavily influenced by wooden pot stills that were signature of the Royal Navy beginning in the 1700s and still in operation today. Pusser’s Rum is rich and aromatic with a full bodied, complex flavor. It is crafted in small batches and continues to win accolades amongst its peers. Pusser’s Rum is one of the most historic and traditional rums still available today. (Link site to graphic)

THE CAT EYE CLUB
TO16CatEyeClub
A crispy cool scorpion bowl in the glow of a Mondrian glass wall with crazy hep beats softly lulling in the background?  Don’t mind if I do!

If that sounds like a dream, keep reading!  The Cat Eye Club is a retro cocktail lounge & tiki bar located in Downtown San Diego in the heart of East Village across from Petco Park. Cat Eye Club is inspired by the late 50’s, early 60’s nightlife culture. It pays homage to mid-century cocktail trends with an emphasis on classic and tiki cocktails.

TO16Gaucho

GAUCHO RUM
Gaucho Rum exemplifies a zest for adventure similar to what Frank Miller (Partner of Cat Eye Club Cocktail Bar and Tiki Bar) and Ray Digilio (Master Distiller of Kill Devil Spirit Co.) had in mind when they set out to create it.  What were they in pursuit of?  Perhaps it was to concoct a rum that rouses someone to strap a shark under each foot, grab a partner and water ski to that magnificent oasis in the sun.   Others speculate that their motive could have been originality; an all-out quest to formulate a signature rum that rejuvenates classic cocktails and can also be enjoyed neat.  Either way, these natives invite you to bask in the big, tropical, sweet, smooth taste of a spirit made 100% from cane to glass here in San Diego, California. PARTY ON MONSTER ISLAND
From rubber Godzillas tearing apart the South Seas to surfin’, Go Go dancing Frankenstein and Wolfman, creatures have always been lurking in paradise. This year Tiki Oasis celebrates our monster brethren from King Kong (1939), Godzilla and Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) to the famous monsters of Hollywood (1932-1950s).

Like lovers of Polynesian Pop, many of the classic monsters we know share the Modern Primitive ethos. Some were discovered in mysterious, exotic, tropical lands but others originated in urban areas and frolicked with average humans.

While Godzilla loved to visit major metropolis’ like Tokyo  he lives on and originates from Monster Island.

The original king of the jungle King Kong was a modern primitive and could be seen cavorting on major architectural landmarks when he wasn’t picking up on chicks in his hometown.

Even the Creature from the Black Lagoon left the Amazon and visited the US.

The classic city monsters made famous in films (The Mummy, Frankenstien, Dracula, Wolfman, The Invisible Man) later got hip to the times and joined the beach/dance party scene. Not only did monsters leave their remote islands and come to the beaches, the Hollywood monster crowd threw their own shindig.

Don your rubber mask and join the monster party at Tiki Oasis 2016!

Timeline of famous monsters
1939: King Kong 1939
1954: Godzilla, Creature From the Black Lagoon
1958: Famous Monsters of Filmland
1962: Monster Mash
1931-1950s: Universal Monsters
1961-1964, 1975: Aurora Models
1967: Mad Monster Party

Recommended watching:
Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961)
The Horror of Party Beach (1964)
Beach Girls and the Monster (1965)
