Mark Todd deconstructs comic book iconography in his 4th solo exhibition, Covered,  at La Luz de Jesus gallery. Covered showcases Mark’s unique spin on the first appearances and origin stories of the superheroes that populate Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters.

Like many kids raised in the 70’s, Mark was influenced at an early age by Star Wars and comic books. Unlike many kids, he grew up just a few miles from the Vegas strip, it’s neon and glitz looming over the city. He graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and currently lives and works in the Los Angeles area with his wife, artist Esther Pearl Watson, their daughter Lili and Mr. Pickles, a lovely French Bulldog.

Detailed show statement and full preview forthcoming.

Tom Neely is a painter and cartoonist whose art has been featured in galleries in California and New York, in dozens of magazines and literary journals, and on album covers. His debut graphic novel, The Blot, earned him an Ignatz Award and made it onto several of the industry’s “Best of 2007” lists as well as the Comics Journal’s “Best Graphic Novels of the Decade 2000–2010.” He authored the Melvins comic book, Your Disease Spread Quick, a collection of comic strip poems called Brilliantly Ham-fisted, and the painted novel, The Wolf. Image Comics recently released his series, The Humans, a fantastic series about biker apes.

But he is best known for the cult-hit indie comic book Henry & Glenn Forever, which he created with his artist collective the Igloo Tornado.

Starring notorious muscle-bound punk/metal dudes Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig (with a little help from soft rockers Hall and Oates), Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever is a love story to end all love stories. And here for the first time is the complete compiled collection of the graphic novel that details the fictitious romance of these real-life music icons. This tongue-in-cheek graphic novel satire is filled with adventure, subtle references, and humor, and the exhibition features dozens of pinup art and full-color covers from the original series along with many original comic art pages and new pieces inspired by Henry & Glenn.

The tender care Neely and a rotating cast of guest authors bring to the stories makes Forever and Ever so much more than a one-note gag — Glenn’s tantrums are risible; Henry’s patience is divine — and there are inside jokes galore for fans of heavy music. —Chris Martins, Spin
