An alchemist of color and styles, Shannon Crawford paints oil works that are subtle depictions of dark concepts, disguised by beautiful, surreal imagery. The beauty of his paintings is matched only by the often-intense nature of their content. Conjuring imagery in an exquisite, though provoking fashion, ultimately offering an unfiltered window into many aspects of life, Crawford’s work has gained much recognition in recent years, most recently finding its way into the collections of Johnny Depp, Jack Nicholson, Carmen Electra, Lindsay Lohan, and Ross Robinson.

About the Author:
Raised in Southern California, Shannon Crawford began painting at the age of five. He attended Art Center College of Design from 1993 to 1995, when he dropped out after getting a record deal from Virgin Records with his band Cellophane. Crawford’s painting of his daughter Poppy being attacked by a crow served as the cover for Norma Jean‘s underground hit Redeemer, which opened his art to a whole new fan base. He lives in Los Angeles.

Karen Hsiao is a self taught Fine Art photographer who uses intense subject matters in an unconventional way. Miso is her professional painting identity, developed at Art Center College of Design where she graduated with a BFA in Illustration.

A figurative painter in her early years, Karen Hsiao has since explored the figure and its space through various mediums, creating pieces that are both tactile and intuitive. Photography was a natural extension of that process which Hsiao has sought to perfect. Her work has captured the attention of many primarily because of her unique approach to subject, sometimes with a team of ingenious makeup artists, hairstylists, and couture fashion designers to help materialize Hsiao’s concept. Hsiao has been featured in published works and shown in galleries both nationwide and abroad.

La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents their annual juried group exhibition, LALUZAPALOOZA 2017. This gigantic, no-theme show features works from some of the freshest and most relevant artists working today. Again they sorted through tens of thousands of submissions from commercial illustrators, graphic designers, tattooists, scenics, students, street taggers, animators and working gallery artists. How many will they show this year? There are just over 130 pieces from just over 64 artists, making this the most exclusive selection of tastefully, jam-packed, salon-style exhibited works in Post-Pop. There are some familiar names from our ever-growing roster of feature artists, but an overwhelming percentage of the work this year are from a brand new batch of previously undiscovered, emerging talent.

LALUZAPALOOZA HISTORY
Previously our annual group show was called “Everything but the Kitschen Sync,” but it began life in October 1986 as the “Día de los Muertos” show which was entirely focused on the folk art, sculptures, and imagery of Mexico’s “Day of the Dead” celebration. By 1995, gallery owner and curator Billy Shire felt the show had run its course and presented other themed group exhibitions such as the 1996 “21st Century Tiki Show.” In 1998 Shire decided to present a non-themed show dedicated to illustrative and narrative artwork. As many local artists work in commercial graphic art fields such as illustration, cartooning, animation, etc., the show was named “Uncommercial Art by Commercial Artists.” In 2004, Shire changed the show title to the more encompassing and less-cumbersome “Everything But the Kitschen Synch.” Several spelling and name variations later, here we are…

“Everyone looks at this show for new and interesting artists” states Shire – “and indeed, not only does La Luz de Jesus pick artists from the group show for smaller group and solo shows down the line–numerous curators and owners of other galleries also keep their eyes on the yearly show for potential artists to add to their rosters.”

“This is the one show annually that most patrons look forward to seeing, as it’s a chance to discover new artists in the venue that has launched so many careers,” notes gallery director Matt Kennedy. “Every year we manage to discover a new conglomeration of fresh talent, and among them a class of breakout successes. That’s really a credit to the accessible talent pool. The quality and availability of instruction (both in schools and through independent study) coupled with the culture that this city attracts, fosters a welcoming environment for people with the ability to create –often in reaction to their individual situations.”

Sodium Light Promo 1-2Maryrose Crook is a self-taught New Zealand artist drawing on traditions of surrealism, still life and folk art creating worlds where beauty and brutality exist in close proximity; and a musician, performing and recording along with husband Brian Crook, as The Renderers . Maryrose has been exhibiting in public and private spaces since 1996, and has work held in collections in New Zealand, the USA, Germany and Australia. She has been the recipient of the Wallace Development Award, one of New Zealand’s most prestigious art awards, and has undertaken numerous artist residencies. She is currently based in Joshua Tree, California, in the Mojave Desert.

I’m calling the show Nigredo which is a word that describes a state of being in Alchemy, which is the blackness you have to create as an alchemist, you have to burn everything till it’s completely black before you can transmute it, and of course there’s all this psychological stuff about it but I quite like the historical alchemical, the old fashioned Alchemy thing so Nigredo is the blackest of the black, and the next stage is Albedo which is the whitest of the white. – Maryrose Crook

The Renderers

The Renderers who will perform at the show opening on August fifth, have been making music since 1989 playing in various incarnations with rotating members, with partners Brian and Maryrose Crook being the mainstays of the group. Described as deep, dark and psychedelic, the Renderers music ranges from wild and raging to dreamlike and spooky. The Crooks have supported such artists as Thurston Moore, playing with a full band to a packed New York audience; to Joanna Newsom, and Bill Callahan, who they supported in New Zealand, playing theatre shows as a duo, to Simon Joyner and Wooden Wand, who they recently supported in a house concert in Yucca Valley, California.  The Renderers have released nine albums on such labels as Flying Nun (New Zealand), Merge (USA), and current label, Ba Da Bing, (New York).

Robert Craig is the most famous artist you’ve never heard of.

Recently the subject of a documentary by his good friend and master painter, Ron English, Craig is possessed of an innate ability and an irreproducible work ethic that has confined him to painting 18 hours per day, everyday, for over 55 years.

His hyper-realistic renderings have fooled many a casual observer to believe that they are digital, but his technique is entirely analog. Craig hand grinds pure Carrara marble to a powdered dust, mixes it with a combination of latex, water, egg white, and white shoe dye, which he applies to un-stretched, tightly-woven, Belgian linen in micro thin layers–each of which he finely sands to the point that the term “polished” may be more accurate. He insists that each layer can only be properly cured, individually, by sunlight.

In person, one might be even more doubtful that what they see is an actual painting. The surface is devoid of almost any tooth or sign of brush stroke and lies perfectly flat as though it were manufactured on a printing press. On close inspection, however, an experienced painter can find the telltale signs of it being handcrafted (mainly on verso). But most are at a loss, and nearly all are in awe.

We’ve taken a revolutionary approach to showcasing these masterpieces: we’ve foregone stretching and framing to expose the complete surface of Robert’s canvases. We strongly feel that this is the only way to convince all observers to the authenticity of Craig’s creations.

Come see and hear the boombox sound system one more time, pick up a cassette or two, buy a real or chocolate boombox, and meet Patti Astor, star of the seminal, Hip-Hop classic Wild Style and co-founder of NYC’s legendary FUN Gallery where neighborhood kids, downtown artists, b-boys, rock, film and rap stars mixed with museum directors, art historians and uptown collectors at wild openings featuring artists like Futura, Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quiñones, Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Boombox Creators is a tribute to the iconic, functional, and utilitarian cultural artifacts known as boomboxes, and the collection curator Matt Kennedy has assembled makes a good argument for the boombox as high art. This exhibition features original, design blueprints for boomboxes that never went into production, paintings and sculpture inspired by them, photographs from the era, and of course, the boxes themselves. The closing party will feature O.G. Jeckle, old-school poppers, and other special guests dancing to the boombox sound system, which includes classic JVC, Lasonic, Sharp, Panasonic, Sanwa, and many other classic, electronic masterpieces.

We’re also exhibiting the very first exhibition of GWAR co-founder Hunter Jackson’s art (the current cover story on Juxtapoz Magazine) alongside a selection of 60 pieces by 20 artists, all priced $400 or less. This post-holiday jam is perfect for starting your New Year right!

These works embody my continued exploration of the forces that fuel and animate the human, the animal, and the elemental material of the world. In the creation of these allegorical images of solitude, absurdity, determination, transcendence, and consequence, I reduced my palette to the four archaic pigments: Red corresponding to blood, black derived from charred animal bones, fiery yellow and titanium white bring light to dark lands. –Mark Gleason

Holiday Pop-Up Show!
La Luz de Jesus Gallery is located inside the Soap Plant / WACKO complex, widely regarded as the greatest gift store in Los Angeles, if not the world. As such, this is basically ground zero for holiday shoppers. This December, we’re hosting a month long Pop-Up show of new work that can be bought directly from the walls for immediate shipping and gifting and at prices low enough to diminish the guilt of self-gifting. More than a mere extension of our Art in the Hallway collection, we approached 20 of our favorite artists and asked them to create multiple pieces priced $400 or less specifically for this event. This utterly delicious book tells the story of a humble ice cream cone man whose search for work takes him many places and puts him in challenging situations as he tries to earn a living over the course of a week. Ice Cream Work features surreal characters living in real world situations bursting with color and detail. This book reminds us that everyone has unique traits which make them special and emphasizes the importance of creativity and imagination in daily life. Internationally acclaimed artist Naoshi has created a brilliant and fantastical world of her own full of quirky characters and situations that draw the reader into pages bursting with color. About the Author

Naoshi is an internationally acclaimed Japanese illustrator whose distinctive characters and original style are recognized around the world. She uses shiny colorful sand, called Sunae in Japan, to create surreal people living in the real world. In her effort to familiarize more people with Sunae outside of Japan, she has participated in a wide range of projects including gallery exhibitions, commercial work, and children’s workshops. Naoshi is a Tokyo based artist currently living in Los Angeles.
