Vallance Now! Campaign Rally! Jeffrey Vallance’s campaign will appear at Losjocos Gallery on Sunday June 5, ahead of the state’s primary election in support of Vallance’s speech on “Nixon’s Ghost” in conjunction with the Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends exhibition.

“Now more than ever” and “Vallance Now,” the campaign boasts through its various online and social media platforms. You have the power to choose a new direction for America. To break the back of the corrupt systems of campaign finance and our rigged economy and stand up for FREEDOM. Let art win!

Having an intense fascination with Richard Nixon since the 1960s, and receiving an endorsement to run for office from the former First Lady herself, the one and only Mrs. Nixon, this performance based campaign seeks to challenge political systems. While Jeffery Vallance claims, “contrary to the rumors, I am not running for political office,” organizers of the “Vallance Now” campaign believe so wholeheartedly in their leader that they propose to change history with their unlikely candidate.

At a recent event, a young campaign organizer was asked, “Why should I vote for Vallance?”, his response was simple and Vallance_Nowhonest, “consider the alternatives . . . “

About Vallance Now:
Vallance: Now is a grass roots campaign to promote Jeffrey Vallance as a candidate for the 2016 election.

vallance_campaignAbout Jeffrey Vallance:
For over thirty years, Jeffrey Vallance has turned a critical and humorous eye toward his own wide-ranging experiences. Based on the artist’s memories, collections, and adventures, Vallance’s drawings, sculptures, installations and performance-based works make reference to his childhood in California, voyages to the Polynesian Islands and Iceland, residences in Las Vegas and the Arctic, sojourns to the Vatican, and to his celebrated Blinky the Friendly Hen project in 1978, when he held a funeral service for a frozen supermarket hen at Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park. The artist’s examination of these experiences combines a pseudo-anthropological approach with an art historically informed practice, and addresses themes of faith, myth, ritual and popular culture, along with the geopolitical landscapes of the past and present.

Born in 1955 in Redondo Beach, California, Vallance currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received a BFA from California State University, Northridge in 1979 and an MFA from the former Otis Art Institute of the Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles in 1981.

Among Vallance’s many solo exhibitions since the mid-1970’s, his most notable include The Vallance Bible at Centre d’édition contemporaine in Geneva, Switzerland (2012), The Word of God at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh (2011-2012), The Vallance Bible at Centre d’édition contemporaine (2010), Lars Pirak of Lapland, an intervention project at Ájtte Sámi Museum in Jokkmokk, Sweden (2009), Relics and Reliquaries at Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, CA (2007), De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal in Middelburg, Holland (2007), Preserving America’s Cultural Heritage at LACMALab, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2006), among others. In 2004, he received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation award for installation art. Vallance was the host of MTV’s The Cutting Edge in 1983 and has appeared on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman.

His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Barbican Centre in London, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, TX, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf IN Germany, Tate Gallery in Liverpool, UK, UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Witte de With Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, among others. His works are held in such public collections as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and Moderna Museet, Sweden; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Vatican Museum, The Vatican, Rome.

Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends
Urban legends serve as our modern day mythology. Based on cultural traditions and morality tales, these stories prey upon our collective fears and provoke strong, emotional responses. Traditionally, in order for these legends to survive, a mix of text and imagery was used in storytelling, heightening the power of the legend as it passed down through generations. More recently, the Internet has encouraged the rapid dissemination of these modern legends, many of which can be traced back to the original folklore that inspired them.

The purpose of the exhibition is not to illustrate urban legends, but to analyze them in conjunction with each artist’s own subjective viewpoint resulting in a shared experience between artist and audience.

F is for Freak
F will be performing their first live set of 2016 as “F for Freak” at the opening reception at 8pm, with projections.  F for Freak, is a Los Angeles art-rock supergroup whose motto is “Simplicity Through Noise” and who have developed a practice rooted in improvisational ensemble playing using electric guitars (played with rubber mallets and other extended as well as traditional techniques) and vintage synthesizers, in various combinations of three. Their debut album Faüxmish was released Sept 2, 2011 and later this year they will be releasing a limited edition cassette titled FF. F are Daniel Hawkins, Marnie Weber, and Doug Harvey

If you are looking for a more exclusive experience or can’t make the opening reception, Cartwheel Art Tours and Atlas Obscura have partnered with a tour on Sunday May 22nd. The tour will offer a curatorial walk-through, in addition it will provide the opportunity to meet some of the artists exhibiting in the show, who will speak about the personal connection to the urban legends in their work.
