Jesika von Rabbit: June L.A., July Southern States, SFTRI, New Album

JESIKA von RABBIT, the former leader of Joshua Tree’s hi-desert trailblazers, GRAM RABBIT, will be performing two shows in Los Angeles, and touring through the Southern states with her longtime musical cohorts, the cinematic psychedelic spaghetti-western SPINDRIFT. A new 45 has been released on Sympathy for the Record Industry and her second solo album will be released the early fall.

In the past few months, JESIKA von RABBIT has released a stream of digital singles, as well as a 45 RPM record featuring “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” b/w “Din Ho” on the revived Sympathy for the Record Industry label. In the fall of 2018, von RABBIT will release Dessert Rock, her second solo album and the follow-up to her 2015 LP Journey Mitchell, both on Dionysus Records. While Journey Mitchell is laden with new wave-influenced synths, keyboard melodic and infectious dance beats, Dessert Rock is an avalanche of appetizing amalgams that incorporate hints of calypso, sci-fi, psychedelic, rock, electro, and funk.

von RABBIT’s current band line-up includes former GRAM RABBIT guitarist and independent producer Ethan Allen, Dionysus Records’ Lee Joseph on bass, and drummer, Dan Kashuck. von RABBIT has performed at Desert Daze on the bill with IGGY POP and SLEEP and has shared stages with a diverse roster of acts including WANDA JACKSON, CAT POWER, DEATH VALLEY GIRLSTHE CRYSTAL METHOD and has toured with EAGLES OF DEATH METAL. Dubbed “The Queen of the Hi-Desert”, von RABBIT has a menu item named after her at the world renown Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, CA – the delicious “Nachos von Rabbit” and in spring of 2018, once again won Best Front Woman of the Coachella Valley at the Coachella Valley Weekly Music Awards.

She is drop dead gorgeous and has an absolutely incredible voice. But von RABBIT is more than a pretty chick singer. She is an innovative creator and expressionist as well as one hell of an entertainer… Her show is brilliantly nonsensical; a sonic and visual spectacle that is unlike any other and you cannot take your eyes away. She is an artist that you just have to keep coming back to see because you evolve every time you do. – Coachella Valley Weekly

Exotica and TV Music Legend Robert Drasnin Passes

DionysusSiteDrasnin

We with great sadness announce that the great Robert Drasnin passed away in the afternoon of 5/13/15, after about a year of failing health. He was 87 years old.

Bob is now mostly known for his two masterpiece exotica albums, Voodoo and Voodoo 2, but those are only two highlights in a long and multifaceted career as a player, composer, executive, and teacher.

He joined the Musicians Union at the age of 14 upon being hired to play in the Canteen Kids big band on Hoagy Carmichael’s radio show. He first made his way as a player through the forties, playing alto saxophone and clarinet with a great many big bands, including Les Brown, Freddie Slack, Tommy Dorsey, and others. He studied composition and conducting at UCLA, joined a bebop era Red Norvo Quintet (with whom he recorded), and evolved into a film/tv composer and also a very well regarded sideman (on clarinet and alto saxophone).

As a television composer, he was prolific. Twilight Zone, Wild Wild West, Mission: Impossible, Man From U.N.C.L.E. all boasted great Drasnin scores, and such giants as Johnny Mandel and Jerry Goldsmith considered him an equal. Rightfully.

He eventually became the head of music for CBS television, until his position was eliminated (mostly because the vast majority of shows were made by outside production companies, not the network).

He took to teaching film/tv music, first at the Dick Grove School, then at the UCLA Extension, and he was an excellent teacher, beloved by his classes. I sat in on many of them, and he was inspired, inspiring, insightful, and generous with to everyone to whom he taught.

DrasninIn the mid nineties, the resurgence of interest in exotica brought him back to public musicmaking. Unlike any of the other first generation exotics, Bob’s powers as a composer and conductor were undiminished. The 1996 reissue of his Tops Records 1959 gem Voodoo returned him to composing and playing. He played on a great many records of mine and toured in my jazz quartet (teaching me more about music than I can ever estimate in the process). He played on my music for Dexter’s Laboratory, Flintsones On The Rocks, Tilt: The Battle To Save Pinball, and the Bernie Mac Show. And he was playing at least as well as he had in the fifties.

In 2007, he returned to the studio as composer and conductor with Voodoo 2, a record that did more that just pick up where the first one left off, but rather showed a greater, deepened command of composing and orchestration. It was cut almost entirely live in two days in an auditorium at Pierce College in the Valley. The cast of musicians was stellar, and his brilliance in those sessions was truly awesome to all who witnessed it. In 2008, he was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, an honor that meant the world to him.

There were a few exotica performances after that, but the last years of his life were devoted mostly to teaching. In many ways, his energy flagged as he went into his eighties, but not when it came to teaching. I saw him conduct pieces composed by his last group of students, and his energy as a conductor, his incredibly facile judgement as a music editor, and his unbelievable insight as a teacher served everyone in that room as a lesson on how a classy elder statesman gets the job done.

The last year or so of his life was a lot of health problems. He lived a healthy life — rarely drank, always ate smart, played tennis innto his late seventies — but he became increasingly frail in his last months.

Work was started on a Voodoo 3 (as many of you know). It is not as now releasable, and the family is going to need some time to deal with the immediate facts of his passing, so it would not be in good taste to start asking questions about when and if V3 will be released.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife Marlene and their three children, who loved him dearly. To say he was well-loved by his friends is an understatement. He was generous, insightful, funny, and ridiculously smart, and passionately concerned about the world around him. He’d also take your hand off at the wrist before he’d let you pick up at the check.

His legacy as a great Hollywood composer is huge. Less known but no less enduring is his incredible body of work as a teacher, which is ongoing in the work and methods of the composers he taught so well.

Jesika von Rabbit Vinyl LP – June Shows – Portland Gay Pride

MarinaChavez-JVR-Primal

Joshua Tree’s Jesika von Rabbit has released her new LP, “Journey Mitchell” on iTunes. The album will also be available on vinyl (including a vinyl only bonus track) as a co-release on Dionysus Records and von Rabbit’s own Royal Order label, early summer, exclusively at live shows, until its’ official street date of 7/14 via ILD Distribution when the album ships to retail.

The lead singer, keyboardist, and songwriter of Gram Rabbit’s first solo outing is a playful, poppy, and psychedelic “sextronic” experience, and includes the track “Psychic Spice” which is the subject of von Rabbit’s first video off the new album. The video, directed by Jessica Janos, starts with von Rabbit auditioning to be a new Spice Girl and unravels into a cornucopia of outrageous imagery featuring a warehouse of weirdos which von Rabbit refers to as her “prairie gangsters”.

After trailblazing high-desert rock as the front woman in her band Gram Rabbit, Jesika now steps out on her own with solo project, “Journey Mitchell.” Her album, music video, and stage show debut this month, with release parties in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. Part pop princess parody, part desert gypsy, Jesika takes us on a strange trip. “Journey Mitchell,” is laden with New Wave influenced synths, keyboard melodics and infectious dance beats. But make no mistake — this is not a collection of pop songs that induce a brief sugar high; Jesika von Rabbit wants to penetrate and disturb you. The undercurrent of gothic industrial baselines, ghostly echoes and Jesika’s hallowing voice, leaves resin in your system that will bewitch you long after the music fades. — Coachella Magazine

These days, just about everyone is familiar with the twangy, reverb-drenched plunk, undulating whammy bar and machine-gun staccato commonly known as “Surf Gutiar.” It’s become one of the staple sounds chosen to set the mood for commercials, television programs and feature films by music supervisors and sound designers the world over. Whether it’s conjuring the feelings of Summer, the beach, the old West, outer space, a desolate desert, or the adventures and intrigue of an international super spy, that quintessential “Surf Guitar” sound is somewhere in the background.

Lesser known, however, is the fact that there are legions of fanatics spanning the globe that share a deep passion and sometimes obsession for this 50-plus year old Southern California art form. These die-hard fans keep the genre and its associated culture very much alive and thriving through internet communication, annual meetings, specialty radio programs, and an ever-growing network of performers, collectors and instrument aficionados. Since 2006, the single most important internet resource for everything Surf guitar has been Surfguitar101.com, and for the past 6 years, its official annual convention has been the most important gathering in the United States for anyone interested in this very specific musical style.

2014’s 7th annual Surf Guitar 101 Convention is slated to be the greatest and most well-attended to date. Headlining this year is none other than local Southern California legends Slacktone (slacktone.com), the Surf trio considered by many to have set the bar for all modern Surf bands with their jaw-dropping display of technical proficiency, attention to tone and sheer power. Making their way down from Seattle for a very special reunion performance comes The Boss Martians (facebook.com/bossmartians), who exploded onto the scene in the early 90s with their traditional sound featuring organ. From Japan, for the first time in many years with another historic reunion performance is The Surf Coasters (surfcoasters.com), one of the most prolific of all Surf bands, releasing upwards of 25 recordings since their formation in 1994. Debuting their brand-new full-length album Wiki Waki Woooo comes The Kilaueas (facebook.com/thekilaueas), all the way from Germany, who have been thrilling audiences with their energetic live shows and impeccable vintage tones. Making their California debut is The Supertones from New York, one of the longest running modern Surf bands, a staple of the East Coast scene since 1988. Back to the convention from Northern California to wow audiences once again comes instrumental supergroup Frankie & The Poolboys (facebook.com/frankieandthepoolboys), whose latest album The Adventures of Cap’n Coconuts has been consistently high on international critics’ lists. Up from the San Diego area comes first-wave legend Tom Stanton leading his trio The Surf Kings, who’ll present their special brand of heavy, moody Surf. And last, but certainly not least comes the intensity of power Surf trio Threesome (threesomeband.com), fresh off of a European tour in support of their latest EP, On Tour. Live performances will also include an all-star tribute to first-wave pioneers The Atlantics of Australia, featuring members of The Madeira, The TomorrowMen and Insect Surfers, and a special showcase by one of the originators of Surf music, the creator of “Mr. Moto” himself, Paul Johnson.

In addition to the live performaces, the all-day event will feature a Surf music marketplace, with one of the greatest vending areas of Surf-related CDs, records, books, magazines, posters, clothing, instruments, accessories and other collectibles anywhere! Of special note will be in-person signings by Sven Kirsten, who’ll be signing his new Taschen book Tiki Pop, and Dominic Priore, who’ll be signing his new book Pacific Ocean Park: The Rise And Fall of Los Angeles’ Space Age Nautical Pleasure Pier. Confirmed vendors also include Double Crown Records, Surf King Surf Wear, Dionysus Records, MuSick Recordings, Reverb Junkies DVD, Pounding Surf DVD, Paul Johnson and many more!

And, true to the old saying that there’s something for everyone, thanks to the generosity of major sponsors such as Fender, D’Addario, Eastwood and others, attendees will not only have the opportunity to receive free products, but also enter raffles to win exceptional prizes such as actual Surf guitars! Up for grabs will be a Fender Classic Player Jaguar set up by Slacktone’s Dave Wronski, an Eastwood Sidejack DLX in greenburst, a custom Atomic Brain pedal by Nocturne, and a deluxe accessory package from D’Addario, among many other wonderful prizes!

Bring the kids, listen to the amazing live music, shop ‘till you drop and meet and greet some of Surf music’s most important personalities, all within steps of a full kitchen and bar, in the air-conditioned comfort of Los Alamitos’ Starting Gate. It’s reverb-drenched fun for the whole family! Tickets available at the door.
