WINE APPRECIATION WITH VINTNERS, JUDD FINKELSTEIN AND GERALD CASALE
Winemakers Judd Finkelstein and Gerald Casale invite you to join them as they make wine approachable, and break down the intimidation factor surrounding the world of wine. Get wine-confident! You’ll learn sensory techniques and food pairing tips, gain knowledge of common grape varieties, hear engaging stories, and have some laughs throughout. Of course, all of this will be accompanied by an array of their wines The Fifty By Fifty and Judd’s Hill winery.

Judd Finkelstein is the proprietor of Judd’s Hill winery in Napa Valley and has 40+ years of winemaking experience in this famed region. In his other life, he is the band leader of the old-timey Hawaiian-style combo, The Maikai Gents. Gerald Casale is the co-founder of the band DEVO, a longtime wine educator, and proprietor of the Pinot Noir based wine brand The Fifty By Fifty.

INGREDIENTS MATTER: GUIDE TO DRINKING WELL
Hosted by Randy Tarlow from Liquid Alchemist, this seminar covers the importance of choosing quality ingredients when making cocktails. Examining spirits, liqueurs, syrups, juices, and ice. Why we choose fresh and premium vs artificial products. How these ingredients affect the taste and presentation of cocktails. And most important, how to drink well to prevent a hangover. Guests will leave with the understanding of what they are actually consuming and why they should be discerning when ordering a cocktail, how pricing for quality products is justified. and health-conscious options for the long party weekend.

CREATE A WORLD OF TIKI IN YOUR HOME BAR
Pam Kueber of Retro Renovation is ready to reveal all the secrets of creating a world of Tiki in your home. Starting with six blank walls — yes, the ceiling matters, too! Learn how to tackle the process of creating a tiki paradise so that you too, can transform any room in your house into your own great escape. Based on interviews with professional tiki bar designers and homeowners who shared lessons from their projects, plus countless hours of research to create her own “Mahalo Lounge”, Pam has distilled this creative project into seven distinct steps. You’ll hear about tiki-theory essentials, design concepts, options for materials and where to get them, the big no-no’s, and more. Creating a home tiki bar can be an intimidating project – “more is more” here, but you can do it if you take it step-by-step!

MAI TAI ROA A’E! W/JEFF “BEACHBUM” BERRY
The world’s most famous Tiki drink is 75 years old this year … and so is the war over who invented it.  Trader Vic claimed he invented the Mai Tai in 1944. Bandleader Harry Owens claimed he introduced the Mai Tai to the world in 1954.  And Don The Beachcomber said he invented the Mai Tai way back in 1932.  At the risk of getting fragged in the crossfire, Beachbum Berry will examine the evidence and serve up samples of different Mai Tai recipes — including Vic’s 1944 Mai Tai, still “da kine” after all these years!

Saturday
RIFFS & SPIFFS
Come learn what makes a Tiki drink different from a tropical drink and how to make your own spin-off the Tiki classics. Join mixologist and author Tiki Lindy on this fun exploration of what makes a balanced and Tiki-inspired cocktail while trying a few Tiki Lindy original riffs.

Tiki Lindy is a veteran tiki bartender, rum advocate, and tiki icon most notable for her private events bartending, award-winning mixology and as the author of “Tiki Lindy’s Field Guide to Pupus, Tidbits & Exotic Provisions”–a first of its kind collection of regionally inspired tiki cuisine recipes. She is San Francisco based but bartends nationwide.

TIKI PAIRING
We have asked a limited number of rum, beer, and other spirit brands to share with the Tiki Oasis audience their favorite taste combinations! What should you sip while indulging in dark chocolate, nuts, dried and fresh fruits? Does jerky or popcorn really pair with any spirit brand? Join us for this unique event and find out!

THE HOME BAR GUIDE TO TROPICAL COCKTAILS
Join the pros, Tom and Kelly, as they explain the creation of their latest cocktail tome, The Home Bar Guide To Tropical Cocktails, from concept to printed book. The process took over two years! They give you an insider perspective of what it takes to bring a published book to fruition. From choosing over 150 original recipes, to the art and photography gathering process, through collaborating with a European book publisher, and working within layout requirements. They will also give a practical tutorial on syrup making. Q&A will be encouraged. Includes one of Tom & Kelly’s cocktails.

Sunday
IT’S KIDDIE COCKTAIL TIME!
Calling all junior mixologists! Join us for a swingin’ master class on slinging up some tasty Kiddie Cocktails! Learn more about the coolest-ever collection of fabulous drink recipes in every flavor and style under the sun – sharp and tangy, smooth and sweet, fizzy but never flat, crisp and fruity, or rich and creamy – all minus the hooch! Surprise your friends with a Kosmic Kooler, get the party started with a Dream Punch or cruise to Hawaii with a Little Pink Pearl. You’ll also find tips on setting up your own kiddie cocktail bar – with advice on choosing everything you’ll need to make your cocktails look as amazing as they taste! Come and wet your beaks with Kiddie Cocktails book author Stuart Sandler for an afternoon you won’t soon forget!

Stuart Sandler launched the Font Diner font foundry in 1996. Inspired by American popular culture of the 1930s–1960s, he has created more than 500 original typefaces for the graphic design industry, and solidly established a reputation as the premier retro display typeface designer.  In 2004, Sandler launched Mister Retro, offering retro graphic design software products to complement his original typefaces. Mister Retro features a wildly popular suite of Photoshop plug-ins, Snappy Hour vector artwork, and original serigraphs from the world-renowned lowbrow artist Derek Yaniger. When he’s not in his studio, Sandler enjoys life in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with his family, and indulging in world-class supper club dining – hunkered over a fancy pickle, radish, and black olive relish tray and sipping on a Shirley Temple.

TIKI OASIS BARTENDER BATTLE
The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the Celebrity Death Match, the Thunderdome: none of these contests of grit and skill included cocktails. Shame on them. The Tiki Oasis Bartenders Battle will pit some of the best bartenders in San Diego against each other in a no-holds-barred, head-to-head cocktail throw-down. Sample some of the best, most innovative Tiki cocktails in San Diego while you cheer on your bartending champion. They all may battle but only one can win!

Ram Udwin is the founder and creative mind behind Boy Drinks World, maker of fine cocktail bitters, tinctures, and other delightful things. Aside from running Boy Drinks World, Ram is a professional craft cocktail bartender, spirts expert, educator, Tikiphile and sometimes rum judge that is enthusiastic about all things related to drinking well. Tiki Oasis 19: “Catch the New Wave” Event Overview

Tiki Oasis Instagram

Tiki Oasis, is the original and largest Tiki event in the world and features in five nights and four days:  live music, dance, djs, marketplace vendors, fashion shows, costume contests, poolside entertainment, miss Tiki Oasis contest, car show, kids activities, art exhibit, plus top experts giving educational presentations on everything from cocktails and food, art, architecture, pop culture history, and tiki carving!

As always at Tiki Oasis, the event is all about the Tiki lifestyle. In addition, every year, the event explores a theme which adds dimension or explores a different aspect of Popular Culture tangential to Tiki.

“Catch the New Wave!” is an obvious nod toward Surf music, while “New Wave” is a blast from the early 1980s. In the 1980s, simultaneous to New Wave, was the “Second Wave” in the swell of Surf Music history, the charge was mainly led by Los Angeles bands like Agent Orange, Jon & the Nightriders, The Insect Surfers, or the gimmicky Surf Punks. At Tiki Oasis 2019 we present acts that relate to 1980s New Wave with a surf or exotica twist, “Second Wave” Surf music, and a few original “New Wave”-ers to create a totally radical weekend that will leave you stoked.

17th Annual Joshua Tree Music Festival Spring 2019

17th Annual Spring Joshua Tree Music Festival – swaggering blues, gospel-fused folk, Afro rock/soul, LA house party punk/funk, dreamy psychedelic synth pop and more to round out the lineup this May.

Joshua Tree Music Festival has announced the rest of its lineup for the upcoming 17th Annual Spring Festival happening May 16 – 19, 2019. Music lovers will relish in the eclectic lineup featuring artists and inspiration from around the globe.  Expect to be taken on a musical journey over the course of this 4 day event in the Mojave Desert.

The Joshua Tree Music Festival is known for hosting a variety of musical artists that do not adhere to any specific genre. What they do have in common, is that they deliver powerful, potent, and authentic performances which leaves an impression on attendees.

We work really hard to deliver a truly diverse and well-rounded line-up that you won’t see at every other major music festival. A lot of these artists are on the rise, honing their craft, and creating unique, original sounds says festival founder Barnett English.

The latest additions to the lineup include: Vintage Trouble; rock ‘n’ roll’s best kept secret distilling swaggering rock, soulful blues & R&B grooves, My Baby; the roots driven hypnotic dance with gospel, blues and folk influences, The Cole Williams Band; a genre breaking melding of Afro rock, soul, R&B, reggae, and blues, Thumpasaurus; Punk/funk stew with traces of Zappa, Devo, Prince, and Night Glitter; Loulou Ghelichkhani’s (Thievery Corporation) new dreamy psychedelic synth-pop project.

They join dancefloor masters Dynohunter, renowned Berlin-based DJ Oliver Koletzki, Japanese avant-garde rock band Dachambo, Toronto based soul-funkers, After Funk; recent ‘Best New Austin Band’ winners, Trouble In The Streets.

The lineup also features a strong representation of local music talent.  Gene Evaro Jr, Desert Rhythm Project, Myshkin Warbler, The Amritakripa Band, Gabriella Evaro, The Adobe Collective, DEGA, Megan Hutch all make their homes in the high desert.

Also on the lineup: Earth Arrow, Diggin Dirt, Smoked Out Soul,, Baraka Moon, Radio Skies, Revel in Dimes, Moontricks, Youssoupha Sidibe, City of Trees Brass Band, Sahba Motallebi, Jesus Gonzalez, Beats & Rhymes and Subko.

The JTMF experience features several multidisciplinary musical, movement, and spiritual workshops. Yoga classes are held from sunrise to sunset. A diverse selection of vendors can be found in the World Market. Attendees can enjoy a range of bodywork and healing services at the JTMF Healing Oasis. Art is featured throughout the festival grounds via live painting, art installations and more. Numerous food options are available on-site. An action packed Kidsville provides all-day activities and entertainment for the younger attendees, and places JTMF among the leading family-friendly festivals in the USA.

The 17th Annual Fall Joshua Tree Music Festival takes place May 16-19, 2019 at the Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground, 2601 Sunfair Rd, Joshua Tree, CA.

Arizona Tiki Oasis Brings Tiki Culture to Hotel Valley Ho April 12-14

Mid-Century Beacon of Hollywood Past and Present to Host Arizona’s Premier Tiki Event

Arizona Tiki Oasis (AZTO) is excited to announce its signature island lifestyle party in the middle of the desert at sunny Scottsdale’s mid-century marvel, Hotel Valley Ho, from April 12-14, 2019. AZTO is the sister event to the long-running and beloved Tiki Oasis, which returns to San Diego this summer.

We are thrilled to introduce Tiki Oasis’ rich and varied history to Scottsdale travelers and locals. Hotel Valley Ho is the ideal location for the largest and longest-running Tiki festival in the world, as the property perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the 1950s that we celebrate through classic Tiki culture. – Tiki Oasis / AZTO organizers Otto and Baby Doe Stroheim.

Arizona Tiki Oasis Events

The weekend will kick off with the Tiki-Tiki Ho-Ho Luau, a stylish luau at Hotel Valley Ho’s hip OH Pool, complete with a traditional pig roast, fresh poke bowl station, grilled options including Crispy Cola Marinated Short Ribs, Hawaiian-themed desserts, and of course an array of delicious Tiki cocktails. The Tiki festivities continue with a bustling marketplace featuring more than 60 curated artisans. AZTO presents over 20 educational seminars with topics ranging from tropical cocktail mixology, to the history of Tiki in the Southwest. A pop-up art show will feature international Tiki artists including Japan’s Mookie Sato and Josh Agle (AKA Shag) from Los Angeles, and Scottsdale’s Fashion by Robert Black will be doing a poolside fashion show. Authors Sven Kirsten (The Book of Tiki and Tiki Pop), Beachbum Berry (Grog Log and Sippin Safari), and Shannon Mustipher (Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails) will also make appearances at weekend seminars. Evenings will be filled with rooftop parties, cocktail-lounge-style dinners and a swanky suite open to those with the evening resort pass.

In between Tiki cocktails and programming, guests can lounge poolside at the signature OH Pool, indulge in spa treatments at VH Spa and explore the city with the hotel’s new Insider Mid-Century Tour of Scottsdale. Event tickets are sold a la carte and range from $10 seminar tickets to an $80 evening hotel pass. A limited number of Tiki-Tiki Ho-Ho Luau tickets are available for purchase for $99 until April 12.

Tiki Oasis was originally founded to preserve a historic Palm Springs Tiki hotel, so it is only fitting that AZTO be hosted at one of the country’s best preserved mid-century hotels. Benefits will go to the Arizona Preservation Foundation.

Los Angeles artist and gallery owner, Haleh Mashian presents Figurine, a thematic painting collection, Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Mash Gallery located in the heart of the LA Arts District.

Curated by Helene Brown of Fresh Paint Art Advisors, Figurine by Haleh Mashian presents a diverse selection of contemporary and figural paintings working together to evoke a harmonious narrative. Deeply personal, Haleh’s compositions are painterly reflections fashioned during pinnacle times of her life. Haleh Mashian shares, “Figurine walks inside the mirror of my life.”

Haleh Mashian is also an accomplished composer and fascinated by the similarities shared between color theory and musical composition. Haleh unites euphony with painterly expression and transcends an emboldened symphony of painterly techniques. Figurine is a visual concert featuring Action Painting, Figural art, and Abstraction.

Figurine by Haleh Mashian, opens Saturday, January 19 at 6 PM and entwines three unique painterly themes: Roses, Tears, and the Female Figure. All three motifs represent a twenty-year focus on boldly painting in the moment, working with live models, and incorporating a variety of different mixed media.

Figurine by Haleh Mashian opens at the Mash Gallery, Saturday, January 19 from 6 PM – 9 PM, and on exhibit through March 2, 2019.

Los Angeles, Mash Gallery announces the premiere of “CoutureMash” celebrating art, fashion and their intersections with Los Angeles designers Monah Li of Monah Li Designs, Laura Byrnes of Pin Up Girls and Haleh Mashian of Maison H.

Haleh Mashion Jacket,_Yoga Pants, Skirt

Fashion and art collide in a high-energy opening night runway show produced by Mash Gallery and conceived by curator Lisa Derrick, who says, “I had long envisioned an art show where the artists whose works were on the walls would model Los Angeles designers. When I saw Haleh Mashian’s art-inspired Maison H. line, it clicked, and I began to build an art show that elaborated on the influences present in Southern California art and fashion.”

Derrick put Mashian together with Monah Li, known for her feminine deconstructed looks worn by the likes of Madonna, Stevie Nicks, and Barbra Streisand; and Laura Byrnes whose Pin Up Girl Clothing draws on vintage inspiration to create what she calls “couture for every body.” The two established designers, who focus on body positive styles, incorporated Maison H clothing, accessories and fabrics into their signature styles. The fashion show will present one-of-a-kind runway looks worn by the featured artists.

Los Angeles curator and journalist Lisa Derrick has an eye for creative talent with an edge. CoutureMash presents a spirited collection of California artists representing a diverse range of creative disciplines including: vanguard performer Ron Athey and composer Sean Griffin; collage artist Sharon Bell; tattoo and fine artist Katherine Brannock; textile artist Lavialle Campbell; digital artist and painter Golgo 13; filmmaker Marian Liddell; photographer and visual artist Melanie Pullen; mixed media artist Leigh Salgado; Art Center educator and painter Aaron Smith; writer, critic and artist Anise Stevens; music executive/producer and fine artist Vakseen; and artist, composer, and entrepreneur Haleh Mashian. (Haleh also collaborated with fashion designer Shpetim Zero).

Adding to the historic nature of CoutureMash, paintings by Patrick Nagel and Andy Warhol will be exhibited during the exhibition on view through December 22, 2018. Fine art and fashion available for purchase. Please contact info@MashGallery.com for additional information or private tour.

Mash Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of the Los Angeles Art’s District.

Do you have a love for traditional surf music played on a Fender Jaguar, straight through a 1963 Fender Reverb tank, then blasted through a blonde Fender Showman? So do the members of SurfGuitar101!

The SG101 Convention started in 2008 when the members of www.surfguitar101.com agreed there should be an annual meet & greet for members. The convention features bands, gear, and gives the occasional performing enthusiast a chance to show off their skills on stage. Additionally, a plethora of vendors present their music, merch, and gear up for sale.

The 11th Annual Surf Guitar 101 Convention event celebrates surf music in all forms, from the instrumental tunes that influenced the forefathers, to the bands that created and developed that unmistakable sound, to the current domestic and foreign bands today, either carrying on the tradition of instrumental surf ‘n’ drag tunes in their pure form or progressively changing the face of the genre. There is something for everyone!
