Motel Tiki w/ cultural historian Heather David
Postwar economic prosperity drew people to the roads in record numbers—for business as well as for pleasure. In response to the sharp increase in American mobility, independently owned roadside motels rapidly materialized along the nation’s thoroughfares. In an effort to attract business in a highly competitive market, many motel owners embraced exotic themes. The Polynesian-themed motel was a natural extension of the mainland’s fascination with the South Pacific. With names like Kon Tiki, Kona Kai, and Waikiki, tropical motels once dotted the country. Get your sun hat on and Kodak camera ready… because we are taking a mid-century road trip to paradise. It’s time for MOTEL TIKI.

In its four year run, it became a worldwide cultural phenomenon that would eventually influence everything from fashion, comic books, movies and television shows such as “Mission Impossible”, “Get Smart” and even “Hullaballoo”. Join long time U.N.C.L.E. fan, Robert Short, who appeared on the original series, served as the UNCLE technical adviser (yes, there is such a thing) on “The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.” TV movie and worked on the recent Warner Bros. “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” feature film, as he takes you behind-the-scenes and into the incredible secret world of “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”

And if you don’t want to perform*, come and listen and be a part.

Perfect for those students who have not experienced a movement class before, Miss Martini introduces the classical dance class structure in a friendly and positive atmosphere. Class starts with a warm up emphasizing movement based in jazz, ballet and Middle Eastern dance techniques that strengthen the abdominal core and help to promote an economy of movement within the body. Proper alignment and coordination is the focus while students learn how to shake what they’ve got and carry it with pride. The class progresses with exercises developed to enhance proper deportment and stage presence enhancing each person’s individuality. The building blocks of burlesque choreography are emphasized while students learn a short routine to Miss Martini’s striptease music favorites.

Flashing back through stories and film clips, you’ll learn—or reminisce—about the coolest movies and TV series ever—James Bond and beyond. It was an era when every TV network and neighborhood theater featured tales of heroic secret agents defeating evil masterminds with a mix of exotic weapons, clever gadgets, expert karate, witty repartee and oodles of charm … and never a doubt that the kiss of a beautiful woman signaled either imminent danger or reward for mission accomplished! Don your trench coats and shades and slink on over for this flashback to the coolest of times!

The Suffering Bastard: Joe Scialom, International Barman of Mystery w/ Jeff “Beachbum” Berry
Cairo, Havana, London, Paris, Rome, Istanbul, New York, San Juan — from the 1930s through the 1960s, legendary mixologist “Joe The Bartender” was everywhere and nowhere, always one step ahead of governments who suspected him of espionage because he served so many heads of state, generals, and journalists. This seminar reveals the untold story of the trained chemist who spoke eight languages and survived two revolutions, imprisonment, and exile to create such infamous exotic drinks as the Suffering Bastard and the Tropical Itch. Presented by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, who spent two years tracking down his elusive subject.

Tiki Oasis Book Club Presents: GOLDFINGER by Ian Fleming
Tiki Oasis is pleased to present the undisputed master of international espionage: Bond… James Bond. Written in 1959, “Goldfinger” is the 7th of the Bond novels by Ian Fleming, featuring the debonair 007 and the deliciously dastardly villain, Auric Goldfinger –the man with the Midas touch. Corrupt canasta, a killer bowler hat, Pussy Galore and her Flying Circus — this is one of the best and most iconic of all the Bond novels (and films). Will Bond save the world economy from a madman who wants to take down Fort Knox? Will the world be smashed by SMERSH? Come to Tiki Oasis Book Club and find out! Though Bond preferred shaken martinis to mixed mai-tais, it will be an Operation Grand Slam! Book club is hosted once again by Karen Finlay!

Featuring a journey through the evolution of both décor and exotic cocktails and peppered with interviews and drink demonstrations, you’ll learn and taste your way through tiki’s golden era and modern revival. Learn from the owners and bartenders what shapes their ideas on cocktails, service, and sharing tiki culture with their communities. Tyree, Black Velvet and South Pacific Artist w/ CJ Cook
Ralph Burke Tyree was an American artist of the mid-twentieth century who had a prolific career painting scenes from the South Pacific. His love of the islands was sparked as a WWII Marine posted to Samoa where he became the resident marine-base artist. After the war, he split his years between California and the Pacific, capturing the quiet exoticism of island people and landscapes in oil on board and black velvet. He was one of the premier artists of the Tiki culture movement that swept the United States in the 1960s and which is having a rebirth today.

Uke Jam
Join us for the annual Tiki Oasis Uke Jam! King Kukulele will be hosting this session, in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Atrium. There is no fee to join in, and don’t worry about being experienced in your playing, just bring a ukulele. You never know who will stop by!

7/7: La Luz de Jesus Summer Soiree Six Show – Six Artists!

La Luz de Jesus Summer Soiree Six!
a Six Artist Show featuring
Matt Adrian, Dos Diablos, Tracy Lewis, Sean Stepanoff, Annie Terrazzo, Vakseen

July 7 – July 30, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, July 7th, 8-11 PM

La Luz de Jesus Gallery
4633 Hollywood Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90027
www.laluzdejesus.com

Matt Adrian
Matt Adrian splits his time between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree.

The mood that inspired these paintings came about as a direct, visceral response to the current American political disaster that is currently unfolding. They’re also very much of a place: Los Angeles. While the constant blue skies of Southern California can be enjoyable at first, for me the relentless march of day after day of blue skies occasionally take on an unsettling quality that’s hard to put a finger on. – Matt Adrian

Jorge Dos Diablos
Jorge is self-taught and works predominantly as a painter though also Jorge illustrates festival posters, album covers, and illustrates for print editorials. Jorge lives and works between Guadalajara and Los Angeles and has exhibited in Mexico, the United States, and France.

For some people, it is usual to take off the thorns, but others decide to leave them and watch them grow. I celebrate the hidden human emotions through the paint, I dig from the deepest, from the brain to the guts, from the heart to the stomach or the throat contained. This portraits from the inside of hell, they’re the discomfort nobody wants to see, and every day, they live with them. – Jorge Dos Diablos

Tracy Lewis
Tracy works primarily in transparent watercolor, layering luminous glazes of pure hue to give everything a candy coating of Easter-like color. Inspired by a collection of curiosities, along with a love of fairy tales, Art Nouveau and Old Hollywood Glamour, Tracy creates portraits of ephemeral beauty, often in a contradiction of disquiet and harmony; the compassionate femme fatale.

I am fascinated with the interconnectedness of all things, the strength, and fragility of our world, the duality of nature. The metamorphosis of life and death, the beauty of it all captures my imagination. By listening to nature’s incantations, I hope to portray in my work some of these delicate and unseen forces that surround us. – Tracy Lewis

Sean Stepanoff
In his second featured show at La Luz de Jesus, Sean Stepanoff takes his focus off of hipsters and hip-hop and focuses on the movies they love. Reinterpreting the aesthetic of Ghanaian Barbershop sign painting, he pays homage some of his favorite cult movies.

Annie Terrazzo
Annie Terrazzo surrounded herself with dreams. Her childhood was unorthodox and chaotic, having been raised by a mother who was a schizophrenic adult entertainer and a father who was a formula one race car driver. This chaos was countered by a large family who, through silversmithing and plein air painting, taught her the value of and method to making beauty in the world. After graduating from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, CA, Terrazzo began her career in trash portraiture, focusing on using found objects, newspapers, and magazines. Annie strives to create work that allows the viewer to recognize image and text based language that instantly draws in the viewer and it stands out among other contemporary art due to its familiarity, but also its originality and undeniable intention and masterful craftsmanship.

Back in January 2017, Annie Terrazzo was interviewed by the BBC about the looming Trump Presidency and what it would mean for her and her work. She said, “I’ve always desired to depict strong bad-ass women who would push through the system and overcome the hardships at hand. And now I think I’m just going to be stronger and more bad-ass about how I do that.” During the few months leading up to the La Luz Summer showcase, Annie broadened her scope to include more of these figures, such as women who are struggling to be viewed as more than sexual objects, to enduring bullying on the Internet, to defiant icons of our time. The pieces on display for the La Luz De Jesus summer group show are meant to elevate the viewer to find humor and strength in continuing to persevere in Trump’s world.

Vakseen LLC
While working on hit records has played a driving force in his career, it’s Vakseen’s (born Otha Davis III) passion for the arts that has served as his key to sanity in the entertainment business. The self-taught, Floridian has developed a distinct collage-influenced painting style (Vanity Pop) that fuses elements of cubism, photorealism, fashion design and pop surrealism into vibrantly alluring, abstract portraits. While most viewers assume they’re viewing collage or mixed media art, each creation is in fact meticulously hand painted directly on canvas. Drawing distinct inspiration from our fascination with popular culture, his gallant paintings are a celebration of women, beauty, duality, insecurity, and self-preservation. Currently based in Los Angeles, his paintings have been featured by Adidas, Complex, Juxtapoz, Hi Fructose, Vibe, Bombay Sapphire Gin, and Tupac Shakur’s estate, amongst others.

Lina Lecaro signs Never Mind The Rules
Vicky Hamilton signs Appetite For Dysfunction

Never Mind the Rules is your alternative to the barrage of cookie-cutter self-help relationship books geared towards a set of rules that are intended to work for ‘everyone.’ This is a frank, honest, sexy and racy dating guide that helps you write YOUR own rules by getting REAL with yourself. It is written with a unique rock n’ roll angle that music fans can enjoy.

While doing the research for Never Mind the Rules, we interviewed reputable therapists, rock star chicks, housewives, journalists, polyamorous couples, swingers, and best-selling author Neil Straus (who wrote the controversial book The Game) who turned out to be a huge inspiration; and lastly even men we dated (gay & straight)!

We reveal personal dating horror stories, successful dating stories, wild and romantic anecdotes, and the world of sexual fetishes. We hope you will laugh and cry with us like we do when we watch Sex & The City, Girls, or Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce.

Never Mind the Rules: How to Rock at Love is a portmanteau that combines the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks and Nirvana’s Nevermind with The Rules: (a 1995 self-help publication that effectively set back feminism 40 years by promoting game-playing to land a husband). Unlike The Rules, this book and its namesake get-together are all about encouraging women to be themselves, without worrying about how to snag a dude” – LA Weekly

While her work on Never Mind the Rules marked a new, more personal direction for her subject matter-wise, music and its significance to her life and all our lives will always be front and center.

Appetite For Dysfunction is the self-exploratory journey of a small town girl who risks everything by dropping out of art school, leaving behind the safety of loved ones and small town values, and making her way to Hollywood. When Vicky Hamilton arrived, she landed a job as a mere record store clerk, to then miraculously find herself deep in the trenches of an unscrupulous, male dominated, music entertainment business, and blossomed into Hollywood’s most controversial A&R woman and band manager. Vicky followed her dream and achieved it. She became the top female record company executive and personal band manager. Only to reach her aspirations while working with Guns N’ Roses, to then take on the most coveted A&R position to date at Geffen Records, under David Geffen himself. It was common knowledge, that while David Geffen was relaxing at his Malibu beach house, Hamilton was busy scouring dark clubs for talent. Doing the kind of legwork many larger record labels had gotten away from.

Appetite For Dysfunction is the first time Vicky candidly speaks out about the life she lived on the front lines, deep in the heartless world of the music business. Hamilton brings to this book her unbiased observations and shrewd glimpses about who these rock stars and executives are at the core of their beings, and about herself, as well. She expresses her gratitude for her historic past and her accomplishments, as well as her own shortcomings along the way. She shares her victories, her mistakes, the horror stories, and her dark comedic approach to “making it” in the entertainment business. Even while getting her heart broken on many occasions, leading to some cataclysmic breakdowns, Vicky battles to hang on to her integrity. Painfully taking the highroad, as she loses her job at Capitol Records, while facing eviction and a phone that suddenly stopped ringing, Vicky holds her head high, humbly reinvents herself, and literally, goes on with the show.

Pool & Marinela Barbie, the Plastic Religion

In 2014, two Argentine artists, Marianela Perelli and Pool Paolini, turned 33 models of Barbie and Ken into religious icons for an exhibition called Barbie, the Plastic Religion which was displayed at Popa Galeria in Buenas Aris. The show featured Barbie as the Virgin Mary and Ken as Jesus Christ, and included religious figures from Catholicism, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism with versions of Barbie as Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene and the Virgin of Lourdes. The show provoked widespread controversy in several languages from Argentina to France. In 2016, the artists were invited by Mattel and Les Art Decoratifs (Palais du Louvre, Paris) to display four of their pieces in the museum of decorative arts in the Palais du Louvre, Paris, and were also received in the Vatican by Pope Francisco who accepted a gift of their Barbie, “Our Lady of Lujan”.

During the month of December, Pool and Marianela will be presenting their Barbie, the Plastic Religion in Los Angeles at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. Among the numerous pieces in the exhibition, the artists will be displaying two new paintings created in the style of Byzantine icon (gold leaf), portraits of Barbie (“Our Lady of Mattel”) and Ken (“Sacred Heart of Mattel”); 12 Via Crucis altarpieces; an eight-piece nativity scene; 13 small good leaf paitnings; and a Barbie Porsche 911 with Ken as Krishna, Buddah and Jesus.

11/19: Krampus Book Party signing, reading, music at La Luz de Jesus

Last appearing at La Luz de Jesus at the 2012 publication party for Tales of the San Francisco Cacophony Society, a national group of guerilla artists and pranksters in which he played a leading role, author Al Ridenour returns tonight as Krampus researcher par excellence with his new book The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas

In this new incarnation, Ridenour has obsessively translated his way through countless 19th-century compendiums of folk tales and superstitions, medieval witchcraft documents, and rhymed folk plays, networked with contemporary Krampus groups and mask-carvers, corresponded with Austrian anthropologists and museums, and traveled to the Alps to be properly smacked by whips and tossed into snowbanks by rampaging devils. He’s even sweated inside his own handcrafted suit as part of LA’s annual Krampus festival, which he helped found in 2013 and now directs. With the publication of The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas, Ridenour offers a summation of these explorations in one entertainingly written lavishly illustrated volume examining not only the Krampus but related folklore of Alpine witches, ghosts, spectral armies, diabolical hunstmen, and murderous saints.

Tonight he’ll serve up some history, folklore, and fact on the topic, much of it in direct contradiction to what Americans have come to know of the Krampus through our pop-culture (mis)representations. Along with stories, slides, and video clips, expect some costumed appearances, an audience-participation Krampus Kwiz with prizes (and punishments), and perhaps a musical guest or two. Ridenour will not only be discussing and signing copies of his book, but also demonstrating a form of fortune-telling using molten lead associated with the haunted nights (“Rauhnächte”) that form the background to the Krampus mythology.

A native of Pasadena, California, Al Ridenour holds BA’s in German and English literature, has worked as an author, journalist, animator, and artist, and has been a fixture in the West Coast underground art community since the mid-1990s.

His Krampus research has taken him to the Austrian Alps and Munich, and brought him in contact with cultural anthropologists working in Salzburg and Vienna as well as dozens of members of contemporary European Krampus groups. In 2013, Ridenour co-founded Krampus Los Angeles, an organization that’s made the city ground zero for American Krampusmania.

Ridenour has translated and produced the only English-language version of 19th-century Krampus play, written articles, and lectured on the topic at the international Goethe-Institut and elsewhere, and exhibited his Krampus suits at the University of Southern California’s Doheny Museum
