Pool & Marinela Barbie, the Plastic Religion

In 2014, two Argentine artists, Marianela Perelli and Pool Paolini, turned 33 models of Barbie and Ken into religious icons for an exhibition called Barbie, the Plastic Religion which was displayed at Popa Galeria in Buenas Aris. The show featured Barbie as the Virgin Mary and Ken as Jesus Christ, and included religious figures from Catholicism, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism with versions of Barbie as Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene and the Virgin of Lourdes. The show provoked widespread controversy in several languages from Argentina to France. In 2016, the artists were invited by Mattel and Les Art Decoratifs (Palais du Louvre, Paris) to display four of their pieces in the museum of decorative arts in the Palais du Louvre, Paris, and were also received in the Vatican by Pope Francisco who accepted a gift of their Barbie, “Our Lady of Lujan”.

During the month of December, Pool and Marianela will be presenting their Barbie, the Plastic Religion in Los Angeles at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. Among the numerous pieces in the exhibition, the artists will be displaying two new paintings created in the style of Byzantine icon (gold leaf), portraits of Barbie (“Our Lady of Mattel”) and Ken (“Sacred Heart of Mattel”); 12 Via Crucis altarpieces; an eight-piece nativity scene; 13 small good leaf paitnings; and a Barbie Porsche 911 with Ken as Krishna, Buddah and Jesus.

Last appearing at La Luz de Jesus at the 2012 publication party for Tales of the San Francisco Cacophony Society, a national group of guerilla artists and pranksters in which he played a leading role, author Al Ridenour returns tonight as Krampus researcher par excellence with his new book The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas

In this new incarnation, Ridenour has obsessively translated his way through countless 19th-century compendiums of folk tales and superstitions, medieval witchcraft documents, and rhymed folk plays, networked with contemporary Krampus groups and mask-carvers, corresponded with Austrian anthropologists and museums, and traveled to the Alps to be properly smacked by whips and tossed into snowbanks by rampaging devils. He’s even sweated inside his own handcrafted suit as part of LA’s annual Krampus festival, which he helped found in 2013 and now directs. With the publication of The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas, Ridenour offers a summation of these explorations in one entertainingly written lavishly illustrated volume examining not only the Krampus but related folklore of Alpine witches, ghosts, spectral armies, diabolical hunstmen, and murderous saints.

Tonight he’ll serve up some history, folklore, and fact on the topic, much of it in direct contradiction to what Americans have come to know of the Krampus through our pop-culture (mis)representations. Along with stories, slides, and video clips, expect some costumed appearances, an audience-participation Krampus Kwiz with prizes (and punishments), and perhaps a musical guest or two. Ridenour will not only be discussing and signing copies of his book, but also demonstrating a form of fortune-telling using molten lead associated with the haunted nights (“Rauhnächte”) that form the background to the Krampus mythology.

A native of Pasadena, California, Al Ridenour holds BA’s in German and English literature, has worked as an author, journalist, animator, and artist, and has been a fixture in the West Coast underground art community since the mid-1990s.

His Krampus research has taken him to the Austrian Alps and Munich, and brought him in contact with cultural anthropologists working in Salzburg and Vienna as well as dozens of members of contemporary European Krampus groups. In 2013, Ridenour co-founded Krampus Los Angeles, an organization that’s made the city ground zero for American Krampusmania.

Ridenour has translated and produced the only English-language version of 19th-century Krampus play, written articles, and lectured on the topic at the international Goethe-Institut and elsewhere, and exhibited his Krampus suits at the University of Southern California’s Doheny Museum

Sonny King opens at Silver’s Circus at La Luz de Jesus Oct 7

Sonny King – Silver’s Circus
Inspired by a childhood that was split between a strict Australian boarding school and the colorful environment of the circus where his father worked, Sonny King creates vibrant renditions of big-top life that take viewers back in time. His work captures beautifully the bustling activity and energy of the circus, offering perspectives from both inside and outside the tent in scenes that are dramatic, dynamic, and carefully arranged. Delightfully animated figures–aerialists, clowns, and enthusiastic show-goers–inhabit his three-dimensional creations and paintings. Each scene reflects King’s eye for specifics, as he lavishly embellishes every section of a work. A love of bold colors and experimental lighting are distinctive of his style.

Other subjects, including small-town life, have inspired Sonny to create lively, folksy dioramas. On his thoughtfully rendered presentations, telling moments come together in ways that are touching yet never overly sweet. His work pays tribute to the past without hovering in sentimentality. Several of the pieces in this exhibition were part of a mini-retrospective at the California Folk Art Museum, and his animatronic Ferris Wheel is sure to satisfy Carny fans of all ages.

Author, poet, musician Rich Ferguson celebrates the release of his New Jersey Me novel with a night of spoken word and music, at La Luz de Jesus Gallery!

Joining Ferguson will be musicians Tyson Cornell, Butch Norton (Lucinda Williams), Josh Haden (Spain), and Cameron Stone (Game of Thrones). There will be other surprise acts at the show playing and guest reading from “New Jersey Me”. Expect nothing less than a party atmosphere surrounded by the art of the current Coaster Show and Mark Todd exhibitions in the gallery!

New Jersey Me by Rich Ferguson
Set amidst the backdrop of the troubled town of Blackwater, New Jersey, a Bruce Lee and Bruce Springsteen-devoted young hero journeys toward adulthood in this devastating yet intelligent debut novel from poet and musician Rich Ferguson.

Rich Ferguson

New Jersey Me explores an ensemble cast of unique characters, including Blackwater’s hometown nuclear power plant; a beauty named Baby, Baby’s hell-bent-for-prison boyfriend, Terry; a Mary Kay mom high on Vicodin and Bloody Marys; and an old old tree with a taste for blood. The son of the local police chief, Mark, dreams of escaping the small town’s conflicting and oppressive codes of manhood. In the meantime, though, Mark lives a boy’s life, Blackwater-style: netting fish that have been killed by sudden coldwater emissions from the nuclear plant; kidnapping a chimp from the local circus; selling dirty socks to a local eccentric who may hold the key to Mark’s escape; dating a one-legged girl; and observing the increasingly mysterious behavior of his best friend, Jimmy.

Nothing short of a near-miracle: put bluntly, this is as authentic, as lived-in an account, as pitch-perfect a rendering of the Garden State’s special brand of denizens as exists. So dust off your vinyl copy of The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle, crack open a cold one, and enjoy Ferguson’s lovely, street-lyrical prose. I sure as hell did! —DAVID KUKOFF, author of CHILDREN OF THE CANYON and WEIRD SCENES INSIDE THE GOLDMINE

Ferguson makes full use of his unflinching lyricist’s voice to create a stylized, symbol-rich imagining of this literary archetype as an evocative and darkly witty portrait, perfect in its imperfections, not only of a dysfunctional adolescence but also of a specific time and place in American culture—the hopeful, hardscrabble, self-medicating New Jersey that gave the world Born to Run. —SHANA NYS DAMBROT, art critic, curator, and author

The AWP Conference & Bookfair is an essential annual destination for writers, teachers, students, editors, and publishers. Each year more than 12,000 attendees flock for four days of insightful dialogue, networking, and unrivaled access to the organizations and opinion-makers that matter most in contemporary literature. The 2015 conference featured over 2,000 presenters and 550 readings, panels, and craft lectures. The bookfair hosted over 800 presses, journals, and literary organizations from around the world. AWP’s is now the largest literary conference in North America.

Join us at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Wednesday, March 30th to celebrate the opening night with independent literary power houses Two Dollar Radio & McSweeney’s.

Two Dollar Radio was started in 2005 by Eric Obenauf and Eliza Wood-Obenauf, a young husband-and-wife team with no experience in publishing other than an intense love of books. Over the past 10 years, they’ve become one of the most trusted and acclaimed independent publishers in North America, and the only one to also produce films. Their books have been honored by the National Book Foundation, finalists for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, picked as “Editors’ Choice” selections by The New York Times Book Review, and made year-end best-of lists at O, The Oprah Magazine, National Public Radio, Slate, Salon, The Believer, and others. The Brooklyn Rail credits Two Dollar Radio with publishing “some of the finest works of contemporary fiction,” while The Los Angeles Times has said they provide the industry with “an air of possibility, the belief that the future was very much in play.” Publishing Perspectives dubbed Two Dollar Radio “a budding literary movement;” The Seattle Stranger envisioned them leading a “dream industry” out of the wreckage of corporate publishing.

McSweeney’s is a publishing company based in San Francisco. As well as operating a daily humor website, they also publish Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, the Believer, and an ever-growing selection of books under various imprints. The recipient of dozens of awards for its contributions to literature and publishing, McSweeney’s was named one of the country’s most innovative media companies for “proving the value of print publishing.” McSweeney’s has helped launch the careers of dozens of emerging writers, such as Philipp Meyer, Wells Tower, and Rebecca Curtis; it has also published the works of well-established authors such as Michael Chabon, Stephen King, David Foster Wallace, George Saunders, Michael Ian Black, Nick Hornby, and Joyce Carol Oates. The house has also published the work of musicians, critics and artists including David Byrne and Beck. They’ve also transitioned to a nonprofit in order to fund projects with the next great wave of writers and artist and we’ll be accepting $2 donations at the door to help with that.

Readings will be performed casually throughout the evening and we’ll have a collection of new publications on hand by each publisher with authors available to sign them.

Only books purchased here will qualify for signing.

Florida-born, Los Angeles-based artist Jessicka Addams‘ fascination with Goth culture, all things John Waters, death and cats collide in a disconsonant shower of sparks in her newest body of work, Please Stop Loving Me. Inspired by The Cure’s “End,” Please Stop Loving Me starts as a mystery providing boxes of clues to the artist’s intent, bit-by-bit, moment by painful moment; glimpses into the psyche of a person unraveling. Each one is carefully archived: grief here, betrayal there, an undiagnosed illness and several sudden deaths of the people closest to her. Experiences that changed her life indefinitely have been made corporeal, never to be forgotten. Throughout her exploration of identity, vulnerability and loss, Jessicka maintains an element of humor that subtly lifts the heaviness of her melancholy sculptures and paintings.

Jessicka is also the founding member and singer of seminal indie rock bands scarling. and Jack Off Jill, who reformed for select live dates in 2015. Additionally, she is the resident curator and researcher at Dark Dark Science, investigating the fluid relationship between art and music. Through Dark Dark Science, Jessicka strives to gain an understanding of the processes of others, the methods of individual visual artists, as well as the nature of their relationships with music and film, while continuing to create and exhibit her own work.

Jessicka’s work has been displayed throughout the United States, and featured in numerous publications including the French Art magazine Hey!

Copies of her recent zine After Grrrl: Small Stories from Big Lives, a collection of stories from her friends and influences, will available at the opening. Click here for more information about After Grrrl
