Members of a longtime Los Angeles writer’s workshop will be gathering in Joshua Tree to create some hilarious and sometimes personal verse and prose about life, fantasy and everything that oozes up from the desert and Hollywood.

“Including a few notorious J.T. writers like Listening Lounge proprietor Teddy Quinn, the workshop will happen during the day,” says event curator and “promptress” Jane Cantillon. “and we will cook up some compelling stories to share that same evening with our live audience. “Just Add Water” will make a very entertaining hour of spontaneous ‘misspoken’ word.”

Immediately following the reading, the Dick and Jane Family Orchestra featuring La Luz de Jesus proprietor Billy Shire on harmonica will perform, along with special guest singer/songwriter Sarah Stanley.

Attendees are welcome to take Milkweed home to install. City of Butterflies strives to actively educate the public about the importance of native host or food plants in urban areas through hands-on workshops, outreach events, and media production. The reintroduction of native plants in public and private gardensis crucial to the survival of California’s rapidly declining butterfly populations. Most importantly, City of Butterflies are in the process of making an educational documentary about California butterflies and how to save them. Dadaismus is a bi-monthly experience casting unique avant-garde multimedia music, dance, film and spoken word performances, curated by HM157 artist in residence Michelle Carr founder of the legendary Jabberajaw club and creator of Velvet Hammer Burlesque

HM157 DonBollesMC and DJ: Don Bolles
Featuring musical performances by The Centimeters and L.A. Dronas, experimental music and performance by Circuitry and Poetry, performance art and soundscape by Anna Homler, spoken word by John Tottenham, modern dance by mecca vazie andrews and projections by The Mystery Machine.

The Centimeters
HM157centimeters1Even those of us who were around at a time when the Centimeters soaked the stages of goth rock concerts, Cacophony Society functions, and Mr. T’s Bowl with cacklingly evil vocals, Minimal Man synths, somber violins, and gloomy, drug-fueled guitar jangles probably don’t have all these songs, spread as they were over a few albums and EPs and, perhaps, across the detritus-strewn floor of singer Greg Gomberg’s Koreatown bedroom for years and years and years. It’s odd to think that a band that never smiled on stage, except in contempt for all that was pure and holy, could bring so much joy to its fans. But there are people who are peeing themselves to see a return, even in the form of a greatest hits and a few new live shows, of the dynamic duo of Gomberg and Nora Keyes and the lost boys (and girls) who brought their songs to life right on the cusp of the George W. years.

Circuitry and Poetry

Highlighting Holmer’s work is the performance/installation project “Pharmacia Poetica” which examines the symbolic and tonal qualities of words and objects. The installation has traveled nationwide as part of the exhibition, “40 Years of California Assemblage”, and worldwide as part of the traveling exhibition “Outside the Frame: Performance and the Object, a survey of performance art in the United States from 1950 to the present.” www.annahomler.com

L.A. Dronas!
HM157LADrones

L.A.Drones! hales from both Mexico and Southern California and is a sonic mixture of electro, KrautRock, dub, acid, and noise, through the interaction of loops and drones, but never forgetting melody, performed with vocals, two synthesizers, effects modules, pedals and two mixers with improvisation as an essential part of the performance. www.ladrones2.bandcamp.com/ ,  https://soundcloud.com/l-a-droneswww.vimeo.com/90298781

The Lampshades: Kate Flannery, Scot Robinson at Tiki Oasis

2014-fb-cover

The Lampshades to perform “Tiki Oasis 14: Beat Tiki”

LampshadesLogo

Lampshades1The Lampshades will return to Tiki Oasis in 2014. The duo who performed at Tiki Oasis 10 and 12 is a cult comedy team fresh from the cruise ship circuit, spinning pop and rock into comedy gold as they work out the kinks in their amusingly tortured relationship with Kate Flannery (Meredith from NBC’s “The Office” and the host of TVGuide Network’s “Stand Up in Stilletos”) and the very funny Scot Robinson (“Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy”) The Lampshades are America’s favorite dying lounge act taking the world by storm one odd gig at a time. Check them out on “Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place,”  “NASA Safety Day, Joe’s Pub,”  and “Bentzen Ball, US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.”

View a video of The Lampshades at Tiki Oasis 10, introduced by Charles Phoenix: www.youtube.com/watch?v=17uUNv3ieSI

Tiki Oasis is a family produced Polynesian Pop lifestyle weedender which takes place in Southern California each August and is the only event of its’ kind on the West Coast. Each year Tiki Oasis presents a different theme which explores, celebrates, and preserves mid-century aesthetics via entertainment, fashion, food, drink and education, while showing its’ relevancy in contemporary lifestyle. Tiki Oasis attendees experience three days and four nights of mixology, live and dj music sets, educational symposiums, book signings, marketplace shopping, art, burlesque, comedy, vintage cars, fashion, food, kids events, and more! Each year brings a different theme to Tiki Oasis, and in 2014, Tiki Oasis 14: “Beat-Tiki” offers a unique pairing of the Beatnik and Tiki ethos. Like the Beat Generation of legend and lore, today’s Tiki aficionados are drawn to primitivism and thirst to reconnect with the primal past, celebrating it in a modern context. Spend a carefree weekend in an urban oasis amidst fellow barefoot bohemians, reveling in the kind of art, music, literature and mixology that is sure to flip your lid!

Click here for previous Tiki Oasis press and video.

Also performing Tiki Oasis 14: Beat Tiki will be King Kukulele, El Vez, The Standells, LOVE Revisited, Ixtahuele, Davie Allan and The Arrows, The Unclaimed, The Satin Chaps, The Kilaueas, The Devil-Ettes, The Martini Kings, Tiki Joe’s Ocean, The Loons, The Cocksmen, Boss Fink, Jason Lee and the RIP-Tides, Phast n’ Bulbous, Hang Ten Hangmen, Los Shimmy Shakers,  plus a plethora of burlesque dancers, educators, authors, mixologists, artists, carvers and more. Event DJs include: Howie Pyro, Jon Burchard, Tanoa, Domenic Priore, Nuria, Axel, The Kilaueas, Johnny Bartlett, Skipper Josh, Lee Joesph, Norm Cabrera, Jeff BigTikiDude and Kristena, Wesley, Mike Stax, AND the crew of LuxuriaMusic.com!

Ave Rose Bestiary of the Automata

Ave Rose Bestiary of the Automata
Plus the 3rd Biennial Taxidermy Show
May 2 – June 1, 2014
Opening Reception: Friday, May 2nd, 8-11 PM

IN addition to the Taxidermy show, La Luz de Jesus is spotlighting Ave Rose in an exhibition within an exhibition. Ave uses antique insects, bones and taxidermy ephemera in congress with motion mechanics to produce reanimated, organic robots that tend more towards rococo than science fiction. Also incorporating precious gems and metals, her creatures are whimsical amusements that practically breathe with artificial life.

“Most seahorses have a lifespan of 18-20 months. They are highly sought after as aquarium pets making them far more valuable alive than dead. Unfortunately there is a huge market for dead seahorses in the Chinese medicine trade. I am against the collection and use of seahorses for this purpose. I only purchase seahorses from breeders not poachers. Since these seahorses have such a short live span, when they die of natural causes they are sold to private collectors like myself. I pay more for these ethically sourced seahorses, but it’s worth it.” – Ave Rose
