In the late sixties, Davie Allan & The Arrows carved their niche in the musical history books with an array of classic instrumentals and two dozen motion picture soundtracks. Since 1996 Davie has toured the US and Europe playing festivals and clubs.

8)      Zombie Stomp – The Hang-Ten Hangmen
The Hang-Ten Hangmen traveled forward through time from a previous era to learn how to play surf music in the 21st Century.

Berlin’s The Kilaueas are a traditional surf band with a crazy  guitarist who really is into experimenting new ways of developing surf while jumping around the stage like a madman!

Four dapper dudes from San Francisco makin’ super slinky sexy tunes to shake, bump, and grind your rump to.

13)   Rod Swirling – Jason Lee and the R.I.P. Tides
Known for his live group, Dionysus Records recording artists Jason Lee & the R.I.P. Tides, and his countless number of tutorial Surf Guitar You Tube videos. Jason Lee has spread the instructional bug all over the world to help keep the kulture of Surf Guitar Music alive.

14)   The Gull – The Unclaimed     
The Unclaimed were one of the first and best of the “garage revival bands”. Although they adhered to a purist 1966 American teen garage ethic, bandleader and visionary Shelley Ganz’s songs were always fresh, original and utterly distinctive. The group broke up ’87 and is now back in action with a sack of old favorites, a stockpile of new songs, and a garage rock vengeance!

15)   My Desolation – The Loons
Evoking the wildest trips of the ’66 Sunset Strip, the Loons have been playing their smart, stylish brand of psychotic beat music for almost twenty years. Their lead singer is Mike Stax of Ugly Things Magazine.

16)   Try It – The Standells
Best known for their hit ‘Dirty Water’, The Standells released a string of garage rock singles in the mid to late 1960’s, which are now regarded as proto-punk classics. The Standells have continued to actively perform throughout the world. The group consists of original members Larry Tamblyn (lead singer & keyboard) and John Fleck (bassist), plus Mark Adrian (co-lead singer & guitar) and drummer Greg Burnham.

17)   Seven & Seven Is – LOVE Revisited
The music of legendary sixties cult favorites Love, lives on, as LOVE Revisited. The band consists of co-founder and original lead guitarist Johnny Echols, along with Mike Randle, Dave Chapple  and David Green, with occasional  “special guest” appearances by original drummer Michael Stuart-Ware. At Tiki Oasis Love will be joined onstage by original Love bassist (1965-1966) John Fleck who is still a member The Standells (1967-present)

18)   Gilligan’s Island – The Cocksmen  
The Cocksmen may be an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, north London by Ian St. James in 1964. The band rose to mid-level fame during the mid 1960s and were part of the British Invasion of the U.S. The group released a string of records, most of which were considered commercial failures. The band experienced a revival in the early 1970s when their fifth single “Gilligans Island” charted in the top 100

ABOUT TIKI OASIS
Tiki Oasis’ “Beat-Tiki” weekender offers a unique pairing of the Beatnik and Tiki ethos. Like the Beat Generation of legend and lore, today’s Tiki aficionados are drawn to primitivism and thirst to reconnect with the primal past, celebrating it in a modern context. Spend a carefree weekend in an urban oasis amidst fellow barefoot bohemians, reveling in the kind of art, music, literature and mixology that is sure to flip your lid!

In the spirit of Beat literati, The Beat Museum (San Francisco) will host a pop-up bookstore as well as an expanded booksigning event. There will be several scheduled and spontaneous poetry readings by well-known and unknown authors and poets. And we have increased the number of educational symposiums: Learn about the proto-hippie, flute-playing poet, composer, naturalist, and urban explorer Eden Ahbez with researcher/author Brian Chidester; The heart of the Venice Beach Beatnik scene is examined by author Domenic Priore; Beat era artist, original Disney Imagineer, and creator of the Tiki Room Tikis, Rolly Crump, shares his thoughts; and many more.

Last year’s Tiki Oasis drew 3000 attendees and included three hotels, including the sold-out eight story Crowne Plaza where most of the event takes place.

Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker
“Red Tiki Lounge”

Brad Parker paints “Low Brow Art” about Modern Tiki Culture. He does so from the most remote land mass in the world: the Big Island of Hawaii. “When you live on an active volcano, you learn to make sacrifices.” The artist doesn’t mean throwing virgins into the volcano, but rather his move from the fast lane of Hollywood to the slower pace of the small seaside town of Kailua-Kona.

In doing so, Brad quickly became the king of Polynesian Pop Art, and his work is routinely selected by Hawaiian officials to represent Tiki culture to the world. His art is a staple in the surf world, where he’s partnered with Body Glove, and he’s had sell-out exhibitions in Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Dubai.

Parker’s “Red Tiki Lounge” combines the paint stroke of old Flemish masters with counter culture subject matter from a childhood of adoring comic books, cartoons, and Universal monster movies. This show features skate decks, beach towels, pencil sketches and paintings, and we’ll be celebrating July 4th with BBQ and a live band. Brad will be present at his opening reception to sign cards, calendars and prints.

Brad Parker on his involvement in the “Keiki Surf for the Earth Event in Hawaii

During this Keiki Surf for the Earth (beach clean up and surf contest for kids under 14) “Save the “Pine Trees” surf beach spot for puvblic use and not resort development” event I got to meet a really nice old timer…. kind of a wise, respected, Hawaiian elder. Much to my surprise, we got into a a deep metaphysical dialog and discussion about my Tiki-Art, and why I had changed my life and was here, living on the active volcano called the Big Island, and why I was painting such things as “Tikis”. His name is Angel Pilago, he was the Councilman in the Big Island’s North Kona’s District 8 till he retired. Now, he acts in an unofficial, advisory role to such folks as Big Island surfer and Mayor Billy Kenoi and Hawaii Governor Neil Ambercrombie.

It was a real moment for me to hear years Hawaiian culture wisely expounded to me profoundly, thoughtful, and sincerely from this small, wizened old Hawaiian wizard, and why the island was important, – important to me, – and to me making da’ “Tiki-Art”! “Hmmmm! Yes…. “Tiki-Art” you shall be painting, yes. Yes.”

Since it began as a one-page broadsheet in 2005 (one side was a poster of the Rolling Blackouts bewigged to look like The New York Dolls album cover; the other side was the magazine), L.A. RECORD has always been an art-forward publication, one that championed great music not only with reviews and interviews, but also with paintings, drawings, and photography that honored the music of now in terms of the rock and hip hop art of old.

On Thursday, June 12, 2014, The Pickle Factory gallery celebrates that artistic vision with a group show inspired by L.A. RECORD, now Los Angeles’ biggest music publication. Many of the artists in this exhibit, and the art pieces themselves, first appeared in L.A. RECORD’s pages or on its website alongside features about your favorite musicians. Now, at long last, these canvases, sketches, and portraits from the past decade (including pieces that never made the magazine) are coming together in a gallery setting, alongside other art by the most talented artists and photographers in the L.A. RECORD pantheon, plus art inspired by the many musical/cultural scenes that L.A. RECORD has helped to nurture.

Some of the names first featured in L.A. RECORD, underneath pictures of Gil-Scott Heron or portraits of the Flaming Lips, have grown into L.A.’s most-beloved artists. This group show features an exciting mix of well-known veterans alongside several fresh talents:

This exhibit is a treat for both music fans and patrons of the arts (though, we assume, most of the folks who come to see us have plenty of love for both!). If you love collecting records, going to concerts, or sweating in basement parties, you’ll find plenty of depictions of the people whose music has meant so much to you. But unlike standard rock photography exhibits, which often focus solely on portraiture, Dancing About Architecture will have art from all arenas (no pun intended), including many solid compositions that will sing to you with a harmony all their own.

There will be musical entertainment from musical artists such as the Koreatown Oddity and Bloody Death Skull, L.A. Record DJs, as well as a one-time screening of Dorian Wood’s infamous self-directed video, “La Cara Infinita,” originally presented in 2013 by L.A. RECORD and almost certainly even more disturbing when projected on a large wall in a dark warehouse. Make sure to get to the show by 8 p.m. to see a live interview with one of our readers’ all-time favorites, Guy Blakeslee of The Entrance Band. The festivities are all hosted by L.A. RECORD New Music Editor D. M. Collins.

No money for a big canvas? No problem! Many of our artists will be bringing affordable take-home prints of their best works. They may not be as big and shiny as some of the full-framed originals, but you can still reminisce about the time you visited the Pickle Factory for the VERY FIRST L.A. RECORD ART SHOW OF ALL TIME! There will also be stacks of the most recent issue of L.A. RECORD, plus finger food at an affordable price from the best vegan-friendly caterer the arts district has to offer.

About the gallery:
The Pickle Factory is more than just an art gallery: it’s also a literary salon, an improv theater, and a place where records are constantly spinning. It is maintained with love and presented with great care, for special events only. It literally used to be a pickle factory … but most people found it too JARRING. Check out their Facebook page regularly for what’s happening now and what’s still in the works.

The gallery is also ridiculously close to the Brewery Lofts, and is on the same street as the San Antonio Winery, Lamar, and the cross street is Main.

Damian Fulton “Rad!”
Before the X games, GoPro videos, and energy drinks, a kid with an over productive Rad gland virtually invented extreme sports. 35 years ago Radical Rick first raged through the pages of BMX Plus! Magazine and launched the career of Artist Damian Fulton. Since then Radical Rick has appeared in over 150 comic episodes, on T-shirts and posters, more than a few tattooed body parts, and continues to influence artists today.

To commemorate Radical Rick’s 35th anniversary, “Rad!” brings to La Luz de Jesus gallery the largest collection of original Radical Rick artwork ever assembled, featuring original paintings, magazine covers, and beautiful water colored story pages from the artist’s personal collection. Rad! also includes new, never seen before Radical Rick inspired artwork painted just for this exhibit.

Influenced by Zap Comix, motorcycles and hot rods, horror movies, classic cartoons, and a dose of Mad Magazine, Damian Fulton still paints today and his “Urban Surf” art is exhibited around the world. www.damianfultonart.com

William Zdan “Humors”
My most recent series “Humors” examines the longstanding connections between medicine, secular art and social defiance. In my mind, artists have always been at the front line of cultural development with the currency being the message. Artists have been utilized as the barkers of agendas to either stagnant social development and impose control…or launch revolutions in in thought. My series focuses on paying homage to the latter. Heavily influenced by traditional religious paintings, “Humors” re-imagines a history of cultural development involving a secular worship of humanism, medicine and science. I believe we’re circling back to a time when science, art and human development are at odds with cultural hangovers and governing bodies. I’ve chosen to portray the Humors as a nod to the fearless artists, alchemists and physicians who (despite now absurd approaches), sought to provide an earthy explanation for the human condition. The Humors (the preponderance of body fluids, respective organs, earth elements and corresponding human temperaments) are found in each of my paintings, along with bloodletting tools, leeches and other (now debunked and marginalized) medical conventions like phrenology. The Humors being:

Blood (liver and heart) = Sanguine Temperament = Air
Yellow Bile (gall bladder) = Choleric Temperament = Fire
Black Bile (spleen) = Melancholic Temperament = Earth
Phlegm (lungs and brain) = Phlegmatic Temperament = Water

In the spirit of Albrecht Durer, I’ve woven the themes of ancient medicine into the content of this series. However, my images are meant to be unfettered by a governing paradigm. Whereas Durer was obliged to incorporate Catholic tribute along with the introduction of Humors in his series, my current paintings offer only the honoring of the human advancement (though still hinting at the naiveté that was the product of cultural stifling). My images are anatomically incorrect, flawed and marred by a hidden oppressor.

While still aiming to capture a sense of visual spirituality, the paintings in this series employ some of trademark compositional elements used in religious paintings. Depictions of hovering, saintly human organs and tools of early medicine are transposed over an otherwise supernatural devotion. The panels upon which I’ve applied layers of oil stain have been distressed with loose and primal gesture indicating age and nature. This is balanced against the tightly rendered paint application. The composition, like the theme, is in conflict. My hopes are that the viewer will become an unapologetic scientist of whatever they interpret from my work. – William Zdan

William Zdan is an American artist living and working in Los Angeles. Zdan’s work seeks to capture beauty while provoking contemplation. His paintings motivate introspection, fan philosophical bonfires, and comfort aesthetic sickness. Raised in the manufacturing community of Detroit, Zdan often depicts modern industry and its effect on contemporary culture. Stylistically, he clashes those themes against classical techniques and introduces historical and religious iconography.

Jasmine Worth – “Sacred Feminine”
Jasmine Worth crafts scenes from fairytales gone awry, swirling seamlessly between the sweet and surreal, inevitably dipping into the valley of the morbid. In her latest series, “Scared Feminine”, Worth, under the unifying theme of sacred femininity brings together aspects of Goddesses, saints, mythology and numerous other influences to fully explore the ever changing role of the feminine in spirituality. This series is intended to invite the viewer to explore their own relationship with the many aspects of the divine.

Worth studied formally at Studio 2nd Street in southern CA, and earned her BFA from the Laguna College of Art and Design. While she possesses the credentials, the product of her toils clearly pours from the cobwebbed corners of her mind, not the classroom. Her paintings—a cabaret of vibrant hues—are a blend of soft textures and colorful characters, juxtaposed against gloomy themes. Created in her home of San Diego, Jasmine combines dark influences and subtle-yet-serious undertones with raw artistic talent and a rarely seen creativity. Her work exudes a strong bearing of individuality, manifested through characters that speak almost vocally and give a new element of depth to an otherwise two dimensional medium. Each scene tells a story, and every story is as diverse in emotion as it is in appearance.

Utilizing mediums such as watercolor, graphite, ink, pastel, charcoal, gouache, gold leaf and ink stamp, Chris B. Murray has enjoyed a successful exhibition history in the Midwest. This is his first show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery.

The underlying meaning in Seasons Change is that nothing does or should ever remain the same. People, places and ideas are constantly metamorphosing whether it’s in a positive direction or negative. I’ve experienced a great deal of growth in the last couple years and have experienced these changes with friends, family. To be alive and to truly experience life how it’s meant to be experienced I feel one must always challenge themselves and evaluate their choices and how it affects people and their surroundings. This body of work represents a form of growth and / or change within each piece. I hope it inspires the people to challenge themselves and continue to move push on. – Chris B. The 3rd Biennial Taxidermy Show is not your granddady’s taxidermy: road kill is a central part of the “recycled” philosophy of this unusual and enlightening exhibition, as are discarded livestock, destroyed nuisance animals, casualties of the pet trade and animals that have expired from natural causes. Other sculptures utilize taxidermy techniques in an unorthodox way to fashion fantastic beasts from everyday materials–even the recycled pelts of toy stuffed animals. Elements of technology and decoration combine to create ornaments that approach high art, not only in craft, but in concept.

Members of a longtime Los Angeles writer’s workshop will be gathering in Joshua Tree to create some hilarious and sometimes personal verse and prose about life, fantasy and everything that oozes up from the desert and Hollywood.

“Including a few notorious J.T. writers like Listening Lounge proprietor Teddy Quinn, the workshop will happen during the day,” says event curator and “promptress” Jane Cantillon. “and we will cook up some compelling stories to share that same evening with our live audience. “Just Add Water” will make a very entertaining hour of spontaneous ‘misspoken’ word.”

Immediately following the reading, the Dick and Jane Family Orchestra featuring La Luz de Jesus proprietor Billy Shire on harmonica will perform, along with special guest singer/songwriter Sarah Stanley.

Joel Nakamura’s “Bento Box” deals with growing up Japanese American.

Nakamura is known for his unique style: a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique. He is chosen for many of his commissions for his knowledge of tribal art, mythology, and for his ability to convey stories and information in an intricate and engaging manner.

Nakamura’s ability to render humanity in such primal, edgy hues has captured the attention of clients like Time magazine, US News and World Report, and the Los Angeles Times. His paintings have enlivened the pages of many other books and publications, as well as the 2002 Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies’ programs. Nakamura has been profiled in Communication Arts, Step Inside Design, Confetti and Southwest Art magazines. He is proud to be the recipient of over two hundred awards of excellence.

Nakamura splits his time between commercial and fine art projects. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections, including Wynonna Judd, Chick Corea ,and US embassies around the world.

Nakamura resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico with his wife Kathleen and children Paloma and Kai.
