Los Angeles artist and gallery owner, Haleh Mashian presents Figurine, a thematic painting collection, Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Mash Gallery located in the heart of the LA Arts District.

Curated by Helene Brown of Fresh Paint Art Advisors, Figurine by Haleh Mashian presents a diverse selection of contemporary and figural paintings working together to evoke a harmonious narrative. Deeply personal, Haleh’s compositions are painterly reflections fashioned during pinnacle times of her life. Haleh Mashian shares, “Figurine walks inside the mirror of my life.”

Haleh Mashian is also an accomplished composer and fascinated by the similarities shared between color theory and musical composition. Haleh unites euphony with painterly expression and transcends an emboldened symphony of painterly techniques. Figurine is a visual concert featuring Action Painting, Figural art, and Abstraction.

Figurine by Haleh Mashian, opens Saturday, January 19 at 6 PM and entwines three unique painterly themes: Roses, Tears, and the Female Figure. All three motifs represent a twenty-year focus on boldly painting in the moment, working with live models, and incorporating a variety of different mixed media.

Figurine by Haleh Mashian opens at the Mash Gallery, Saturday, January 19 from 6 PM – 9 PM, and on exhibit through March 2, 2019.

Los Angeles, Mash Gallery announces the premiere of “CoutureMash” celebrating art, fashion and their intersections with Los Angeles designers Monah Li of Monah Li Designs, Laura Byrnes of Pin Up Girls and Haleh Mashian of Maison H.

Haleh Mashion Jacket,_Yoga Pants, Skirt

Fashion and art collide in a high-energy opening night runway show produced by Mash Gallery and conceived by curator Lisa Derrick, who says, “I had long envisioned an art show where the artists whose works were on the walls would model Los Angeles designers. When I saw Haleh Mashian’s art-inspired Maison H. line, it clicked, and I began to build an art show that elaborated on the influences present in Southern California art and fashion.”

Derrick put Mashian together with Monah Li, known for her feminine deconstructed looks worn by the likes of Madonna, Stevie Nicks, and Barbra Streisand; and Laura Byrnes whose Pin Up Girl Clothing draws on vintage inspiration to create what she calls “couture for every body.” The two established designers, who focus on body positive styles, incorporated Maison H clothing, accessories and fabrics into their signature styles. The fashion show will present one-of-a-kind runway looks worn by the featured artists.

Los Angeles curator and journalist Lisa Derrick has an eye for creative talent with an edge. CoutureMash presents a spirited collection of California artists representing a diverse range of creative disciplines including: vanguard performer Ron Athey and composer Sean Griffin; collage artist Sharon Bell; tattoo and fine artist Katherine Brannock; textile artist Lavialle Campbell; digital artist and painter Golgo 13; filmmaker Marian Liddell; photographer and visual artist Melanie Pullen; mixed media artist Leigh Salgado; Art Center educator and painter Aaron Smith; writer, critic and artist Anise Stevens; music executive/producer and fine artist Vakseen; and artist, composer, and entrepreneur Haleh Mashian. (Haleh also collaborated with fashion designer Shpetim Zero).

Adding to the historic nature of CoutureMash, paintings by Patrick Nagel and Andy Warhol will be exhibited during the exhibition on view through December 22, 2018. Fine art and fashion available for purchase. Please contact info@MashGallery.com for additional information or private tour.

12/9: The First Annual Quema Del Diablo Celebration in Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree, CA — Announcing Joshua Tree’s most interesting music and arts celebration yet with Quema del Diablo (the burning of the devil) on December 9th, 2017 at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center off Highway 62.

The two-day event is a recreation of the Guatemalan spiritual tradition of the releasing of evil spirits and bad vibes in the form of paper mache sculptures and figures. The weekend celebration will feature a host of bands, artists and other performers from places near and far. Headlining the event will be Boston’s Dead Poet Society along with featured acts Lujuria, Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal) with a special dj set, and Joshua Tree’s own Jesika Von Rabbit.

In addition to the music, there will be a collection of some of LA’s more progressive artists and sculptors Emmeric Konrad, Damon Robinson of Nomad, and Bad Otis Link, who has provided much of the festivals devil-inspired character. A pop-up art gallery will feature works for sale by the show’s participating artists along with a few surprises.

Event organizer Rolo Castillo thinks this is a great time to release your demons: “This event is a great way for people to release whatever bugged them this year by bringing paper-mache sculptures or other effigies that can be burned in the ceremony. For years we celebrated this event in Pomona and people would always comment after about how cathartic the experience was for them.”

The event will also include fire performers IgNight Flow and will culminate in a large parade featuring amazing costumes and sculptures that will be part of Saturday night’s symbolic burning ceremony. Overnight camping is encouraged with limited space available for RVs.

Proceeds from the event will help redevelop the Joshua Tree Retreat Center Farm.

For more information on the event, please visit quemadeldiablo.com. Tickets are $20 each and available at quema.eventbrite.com

6/15: Anthony Ausgang Reading feat Mitchell Brown – Stories, L.A.

Anthony Ausgang reads from his novella The Browser

Anthony Ausgang The BrowserFamed Low Brow artist Anthony Ausgang once again steps away from his easel to put a literary twist on Pop Surrealism with his new novella, The Browser. Much of The Browser’s plot and prose is influenced by spam emails that Ausgang himself received; emails not only offering low priced meds or free money but more disturbingly, assassins for hire and blackmail.

As in Ausgang’s first two books, the main character is Puss Titter, this time playing an art curator at the Cat Museum in the city of Hill Town Eye. The action gets heavily “meta” when Puss Titter is offered both a painting by the artist Anthony Ausgang and an opportunity to thwart her own death at the hands of an online assassin. Dismayed to find that more than money is expected from her to solve the situations, Puss Titter finally takes the killing into her own hands, making the plot take a surprising turn in The Browser.

Los Angeles native Mitchell Brown (aka Nanny Cantaloupe or Professor Cantaloupe) is a musician, DJ, owner of Melon Expander Records, and assistant to developmentally disabled children. He improvises and composes using analog electronics, magnetic tape manipulation, electro-acoustics, and percussion. Current and past involvements include collaborations with various LAFMS ensembles, Ariel Pink, the Sun Araw Trio, John Wiese, Jack Name, DJ Lance Rock, Matthewdavid and M. Geddes Gengras.

Ausgang will be reading passages from his book in Stories’ back patio as well as signing copies purchased on the spot. Mitchell Brown will alternate musical performances with Ausgang’s readings, and the two will finale with a duo.

About Kii Arens

Kii Arens is an American contemporary graphic designer, pop-artist, and director. He is the owner of La-La Land Gallery in Los Angeles.

A visit to Los Angeles in 2003 prompted Arens’ move to his current location on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood. As his work in album art and band merchandising continued, he began creating unique, non-music associated art pieces. His pieces soon appeared in many galleries around Los Angeles, notably: M Modern, Subliminal Projects, Gallery 1988, and his own gallery, La-La Land Gallery, which opened in 2004.

Arens has exhibited in many shows, notably: Happy War… It’s the bomb, the first official show at La-La Land, which featured the work of Arens and many local pop-artists, including: Shepard Fairey, Chris Reccardi, Gary Baseman, Niagara, and many others. Art in the Dark, another show, was an exhibition of Arens’ own pieces, images created using black light reactive paints and lighting rigs, which concealed hidden content that could be revealed upon the flip of a switch. In 2005, he traveled back to the Twin Cities, to exhibit a gallery show at Ox-Op gallery. The show was based around Spin-o-Paint/Paint-by-numbers/Oil paint.

Later that year, lalalandgallery.com was created, an online venue for a series of customized lightboxes created by Arens. The lightboxes were also exhibited at La-La Land, and featured in a story by the Los Angeles Times. His Hot Lunch Artshow followed in Oct. 2005, and featured classic tin lunch boxes customized with local Pop art. By 2008, Arens found himself as curator of an art show based on the concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. It included pieces for artists such as Liza Minnelli,  Grace Jones, and Femi Kuti. His first major concert poster was completed that year as well, for a Beck/Spoon/MGMT show at the Hollywood Bowl.

This has spurred a career in concert print creation that continues to present, with over 250 pieces created for artists such as Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, Dolly Parton, Stevie Wonder, The Weeknd, Sonic Youth, The Who, Queens of the Stone Age, Devo, Diana Ross, Divine Fits, The Pixies, Tony Bennett, Glen Campbell, Bruno Mars, Tame Impala, The Beach Boys and many others. He also has created posters for various All Tomorrow’s Parties events, as well as Goldenvoice’s Coachella. In 2010, Arens created a print for Radiohead’s Haiti benefit concert in Los Aangeles. Two editions of 250 prints were sold, and helped add to a grand total of $572,754 raised by the band during the event.

Vallance Now! Campaign Rally! Jeffrey Vallance’s campaign will appear at Losjocos Gallery on Sunday June 5, ahead of the state’s primary election in support of Vallance’s speech on “Nixon’s Ghost” in conjunction with the Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends exhibition.

“Now more than ever” and “Vallance Now,” the campaign boasts through its various online and social media platforms. You have the power to choose a new direction for America. To break the back of the corrupt systems of campaign finance and our rigged economy and stand up for FREEDOM. Let art win!

haunted_nixon_library
Having an intense fascination with Richard Nixon since the 1960s, and receiving an endorsement to run for office from the former First Lady herself, the one and only Mrs. Nixon, this performance based campaign seeks to challenge political systems. While Jeffery Vallance claims, “contrary to the rumors, I am not running for political office,” organizers of the “Vallance Now” campaign believe so wholeheartedly in their leader that they propose to change history with their unlikely candidate.

At a recent event, a young campaign organizer was asked, “Why should I vote for Vallance?”, his response was simple and Vallance_Nowhonest, “consider the alternatives . . . “

About Vallance Now:
Vallance: Now is a grass roots campaign to promote Jeffrey Vallance as a candidate for the 2016 election.

vallance_campaignAbout Jeffrey Vallance:
For over thirty years, Jeffrey Vallance has turned a critical and humorous eye toward his own wide-ranging experiences. Based on the artist’s memories, collections, and adventures, Vallance’s drawings, sculptures, installations and performance-based works make reference to his childhood in California, voyages to the Polynesian Islands and Iceland, residences in Las Vegas and the Arctic, sojourns to the Vatican, and to his celebrated Blinky the Friendly Hen project in 1978, when he held a funeral service for a frozen supermarket hen at Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park. The artist’s examination of these experiences combines a pseudo-anthropological approach with an art historically informed practice, and addresses themes of faith, myth, ritual and popular culture, along with the geopolitical landscapes of the past and present.

Born in 1955 in Redondo Beach, California, Vallance currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received a BFA from California State University, Northridge in 1979 and an MFA from the former Otis Art Institute of the Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles in 1981.

Among Vallance’s many solo exhibitions since the mid-1970’s, his most notable include The Vallance Bible at Centre d’édition contemporaine in Geneva, Switzerland (2012), The Word of God at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh (2011-2012), The Vallance Bible at Centre d’édition contemporaine (2010), Lars Pirak of Lapland, an intervention project at Ájtte Sámi Museum in Jokkmokk, Sweden (2009), Relics and Reliquaries at Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, CA (2007), De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal in Middelburg, Holland (2007), Preserving America’s Cultural Heritage at LACMALab, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2006), among others. In 2004, he received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation award for installation art. Vallance was the host of MTV’s The Cutting Edge in 1983 and has appeared on NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman.

His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Barbican Centre in London, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, TX, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf IN Germany, Tate Gallery in Liverpool, UK, UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Witte de With Contemporary Art in Rotterdam, among others. Hearsay: Artists Reveal Urban Legends
Urban legends serve as our modern day mythology. Based on cultural traditions and morality tales, these stories prey upon our collective fears and provoke strong, emotional responses. Traditionally, in order for these legends to survive, a mix of text and imagery was used in storytelling, heightening the power of the legend as it passed down through generations. More recently, the Internet has encouraged the rapid dissemination of these modern legends, many of which can be traced back to the original folklore that inspired them.

The purpose of the exhibition is not to illustrate urban legends, but to analyze them in conjunction with each artist’s own subjective viewpoint resulting in a shared experience between artist and audience.

F is for Freak
F will be performing their first live set of 2016 as “F for Freak” at the opening reception at 8pm, with projections.  F for Freak, is a Los Angeles art-rock supergroup whose motto is “Simplicity Through Noise” and who have developed a practice rooted in improvisational ensemble playing using electric guitars (played with rubber mallets and other extended as well as traditional techniques) and vintage synthesizers, in various combinations of three. Their debut album Faüxmish was released Sept 2, 2011 and later this year they will be releasing a limited edition cassette titled FF. F are Daniel Hawkins, Marnie Weber, and Doug Harvey

Keep Your Hands Inside the Car_lrComplete list of all artists in this DTLA show are as follows:
A.S. Ashley, James P. Scott, Emmeric Konrad, Esther Pearl Watson, Peggy Nichols, Teale Hathaway, Joe Biel, Hugh Brown, Llyn Foulkes, Gregg Gibbs, Hellen Jo, Matjames Metson, Jim Shaw,  Marnie Weber, Nicola Verlato, Michael Criley, Jeffrey Vallance, Victoria Reynolds, Christopher Ulrich, Chris Wilder, Kevin Bradley, Laurie Lipton, Stephen Berkman, Robert Williams.

The exhibition will incorporate a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography and video, in order to capture the essence of each urban legend.

Publication
A catalog is available for this exhibition, published through Grand Central Press. Author and urban legends expert Jan Brunvand, and art writers Tyler Stallings, Doug Harvey, and Mat Gleason will contribute essays. The catalog also includes essays by both curators as well as full color images of the artwork and short statements from each artist discussing their work
in the exhibition.

If you are looking for a more exclusive experience or can’t make the opening reception, Cartwheel Art Tours and Atlas Obscura have partnered with a tour on Sunday May 22nd. The tour will offer a curatorial walk-through, in addition it will provide the opportunity to meet some of the artists exhibiting in the show, who will speak about the personal connection to the urban legends in their work.

The DJs
Bob Deck aka DJ Bobby California grew up on oldies radio, and as a teenager, skateboarded and listened to punk rock to escape from the post-modern nightmare of his Wichita, Kansas. Bob attended Kansas University in Lawrence, where he studied graphic design and was a full-fledged music junkie, sharing his diverse musical discoveries on his “7-inch Show” on college radio station KJHK. Upon graduating, he remained in Lawrence, designing album covers, flyers and posters for many of the bands in the local music scene, and co-published a music fanzine called “micromag.” Eventually, his love of modernism and California sunshine led to a move to the mid-century modern mecca of Palm Springs, California, where he continues as a freelance graphic designer and DJs under the moniker “Bobby California,” named after a song by Curt Boettcher (The Millennium, Sagittarius).

“DJ Lee” Joseph is a lifelong music fan, record collector and pop culture aficionado. As a young child, Lee was obsessed with records and enamored with tiki and Polynesian pop inspired by the sights, and sounds, at Tucson, Arizona’s Kon Tiki restaurant located in the neighborhood where he grew up. He spent the early part of his 20s managing an indie record store in Tucson then moved to Los Angeles to immerse himself in numerous underground pop culture scenes while playing bass in several groups, scouring thrift stores, swap meets and yard sales for vintage clothing, tiki mugs, and old records. His mid-century centric record label Dionysus Records, is now in its third decade. Currently, Lee also runs a small PR company called Reverberations Media whose clientele includes Tiki Oasis, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, and Designer Con. Lee plays bass for Joshua Tree’s Jesika von Rabbit and also has a weekly show on LuxuriaMusic.com called “Over Under Sideways Down” which airs Monday 8-10 PM PST.
