With a background in architecture and urban planning, as well as art and photography, Teal Hatheway finds Los Angeles to be the ideal source of subject matter for her paintings. Teale hopes to bring attention to Los Angeles architecture by offering viewers their often unrealized, but always personal experiences of a city on the cusp of understanding its historical significance.   More info:

Born in Czechoslovakia, Iva Hladis fled the Communist-controlled country in the mid 1980s. She settled in Los Angeles and found that, although she loved her new found freedom, she missed the sense of history and historical buildings so familiar to her growing up in Europe. She says, “Los Angeles offers very little of it’s history, and what is left is constantly fighting for it’s survival. Creating these architectural drawings, and being a member of the Los Angeles Conservancy, are two ways I work to preserve history here.”  More info:

James P. Scott makes compelling urban landscapes from that sliver of time we almost never think about. Each painted narrative describes life in a neglected corner of our ubiquitous car culture. In this corner stand the hieroglyphs of navigation: markers that rich and poor alike rely on to maneuver across the labyrinth that is L.A. The electric Southern California light explodes the colors as years are compressed into an instant at the speed of a passing vehicle. These signs tell their own stories now.  More info:

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros “Profanity Pop”

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros
Profanity Pop
August 1 – 31, 2014
Artist reception:
Friday, August 1st; 8-11 PM

La Luz de Jesus Gallery
4633 Hollywood Blvd,
Los Angeles, CA 90027

José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros is back-with Profanity Pop, a celebration of creative freedom in our time.

Mythology, Religion and the representation of power have manifested in all of the great works from antiquity. With Profanity Pop, Rodolfo pays tribute to specific historical works that have inspired many generations. Universal themes are once again narrated by beloved animated characters, but in the guise of the divine and with all the fragility of martyrs. Away from the paradise of happy endings, the pastel sprinkled drama takes on a vulnerability that juxtaposes subversively with situations never similarly interpreted.

The Monarchy of prejudices and taboos crumble in this story. The disenfranchised reach beyond discrimination, and in this narrative no union is sinful or suppressed.

The absorbing worlds of entertainment, fashion, and excesses, with the magic of kitsch, invite us to desecrate the seductive world of POP.

A Blast from the Past…

I’m in the process of taking down the old Lee Joseph Publicity for the Visual Arts website – and found this, my very first blog post on the site – thought I’d move it here and share….

The first LJP blog.

Monday 29 Oct, 2007
Time: 11:10 PM

I’m christening this blog with a welcome and thanks! The idea forLJP materialized during the summer of 2006. I had been running Dionysus Records, a small independent record label for many years and needed something fresh. At the time, I was considering starting a dog walking business. A friend,Lisa Erickson who was in the process of starting a fashon design company, had made a very aggressive point via phone conversation, that I should do something more than walk dogs all day (uuuh…excuse me…I love dogs) by the very fact that I had cultivated a lot of resources and was surrounded by a bevy of creativity from a lot of talented friends. A few days later while having drinks at a very lively multi-media art, photography, live-painting and fashion show in Culver City at Black Cat Gallery headed up by LA punk rock producer legend and friend Gexa X …an idea came to my slightly buzzed head which kind of floated around until two days later, on a Monday. While sitting silent on the sofa, I was hit with a revelation and wrote up two pages of ideas for a visual art publicity company, keeping in mind my music background. I called a group of people including friends, favorite artists and some who had designed record jackets for Dionysus including ShagHeather WattsLisa PetrucciAndrew BrandauChantal Menard, Bobby Green andCarol Moore of Bigfoot Lodge/Saints and Sinners and Jay Naylor of M Modern Gallery, with the legendary Billy Shire recieving my first call on the subject…each one was asked their opinion on the ideas. All were very positive and supportive, most telling me that what I had in mind did not exist on this level. Billy Shire was the first to hire me to work the “Glenn Barr’s Haunted Paradise” book. Heather Watts came aboard shortly thereafter. I didn’t even have a business card or website or email address other than my Dionysus Records account.
Backtracking for a moment, I had done a three year stint at the log-cabin motif Bigfoot Lodge booking bands and started the groundwork for publicity work when we stopped having live music and went with a seven-night DJ schedule….At the suggestion of Bobby Green, I had kept my Wednesday night, shifted to a four-hour DJ set…and started doing publicity for the bar. I still DJ at Bigfoot every Wednesday and also spin every Thursday night at one of Bobby’s other amazing bars, Saints and Sinners. The bars have become a part of the visual art publicity company as these are very much “high-concept” theme establishments, every bit as much art and eye candy as they offer liquid, social and musical treats.
Thanks goes to all my initial supporters, clients, all my press contacts and friends in and beyond the vibrating Los Angeles art scene for their support and again my clients for their patience in hanging with a company that is just starting out…rough spots and all. Thanks to an early supporter, Leora Lutz from Gallery Revisited who designed my business card…that design became the basis of the look of this site. Thanks to Jeff Turney of The Next Level for desinging this site.

8)      Zombie Stomp – The Hang-Ten Hangmen

The group consists of original members Larry Tamblyn (lead singer & keyboard) and John Fleck (bassist), plus Mark Adrian (co-lead singer & guitar) and drummer Greg Burnham.

17)   Seven & Seven Is – LOVE Revisited
The music of legendary sixties cult favorites Love, lives on, as LOVE Revisited. The band consists of co-founder and original lead guitarist Johnny Echols, along with Mike Randle, Dave Chapple  and David Green, with occasional  “special guest” appearances by original drummer Michael Stuart-Ware. At Tiki Oasis Love will be joined onstage by original Love bassist (1965-1966) John Fleck who is still a member The Standells (1967-present)

18)   Gilligan’s Island – The Cocksmen
The Cocksmen may be an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, north London by Ian St. James in 1964. The band rose to mid-level fame during the mid 1960s and were part of the British Invasion of the U.S. The group released a string of records, most of which were considered commercial failures. The band experienced a revival in the early 1970s when their fifth single “Gilligans Island” charted in the top 100

19) California – Eden Ahbez / California Orchestra
Original Beat Era sounds – Eden Ahbez will be a subject of a Tiki Oasis 14: “Beat Tiki” s

Tiki Oasis’ “Beat-Tiki” weekender offers a unique pairing of the Beatnik and Tiki ethos. Like the Beat Generation of legend and lore, today’s Tiki aficionados are drawn to primitivism and thirst to reconnect with the primal past, celebrating it in a modern context. Spend a carefree weekend in an urban oasis amidst fellow barefoot bohemians, reveling in the kind of art, music, literature and mixology that is sure to flip your lid!

In the spirit of Beat literati, The Beat Museum (San Francisco) will host a pop-up bookstore as well as an expanded booksigning event. There will be several scheduled and spontaneous poetry readings by well-known and unknown authors and poets. And we have increased the number of educational symposiums: Learn about the proto-hippie, flute-playing poet, composer, naturalist, and urban explorer Eden Ahbez with researcher/author Brian Chidester; The heart of the Venice Beach Beatnik scene is examined by author Domenic Priore; Beat era artist, original Disney Imagineer, and creator of the Tiki Room Tikis, Rolly Crump, shares his thoughts; and many more.

Last year’s Tiki Oasis drew 3000 attendees and included three hotels, including the sold-out eight story Crowne Plaza where most of the event takes place.
