Elephant, rhino, and crocodile-headed birds. Dog and cat-headed adolescents. Domestic bliss embodied by rabbit-headed parents and a baby carrot, taking her first steps. Such is the whimsical oeuvre of artist Click Mort, whose remixed nostalgia figurines have made their way into the collections of Mark Ryden, Long Gone John, and director James Gunn, who supplied the foreword to The World’s Best Loved Art Treasures by Click Mort. This tiny, hardbound collection features 88 full-color pages of sculptures that may have once adorned your mother’s mantle piece, but have been transformed into true surrealist masterpieces via scalpel and epoxy. Pick up a copy of Click’s first book and goad him into regaling you with tales of his history as a musician (with The Cramps), stories about his favorite art forgers, and maybe even an anecdote or two about what inspired the art in these pages. Click will be signing alone, but some very special guests have promised to turn up and congratulate him. There will be ample opportunity for Q&A throughout the book signing with the author.

“I hope you enjoy what you see in this book. please look closely at the photos. If you do, thy will make you laugh. If you look closer, they will make you feel. And if you look closer still, they will break your heart.” – from the foreword by James Gunn

“Click Mort creates ‘recapitated figures’ using the parts of different, pre-existing ceramic figurines to create quirky new hybrid statues. Often imbued with narrative humor, the seamless figures also hold a sense of nostalgia as most of the figures source parts from past eras. ” – Hi-Fructose Magazine

Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever Exhibit / Book Launch

Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever Group Exhibition and Book Launch

October 3 – November 2, 2014
Artist reception:
Friday, Oct. 3; 8-11PM

La Luz de Jesus Gallery
4633 Hollywood Blvd,
Los Angeles, CA 90027
www.laluzdejesus.com

Tom Neely is a painter and cartoonist whose art has been featured in galleries in California and New York, in dozens of magazines and literary journals, and on album covers. His debut graphic novel, The Blot, earned him an Ignatz Award and made it onto several of the industry’s “Best of 2007” lists as well as the Comics Journal’s “Best Graphic Novels of the Decade 2000–2010.” He authored the Melvins comic book, Your Disease Spread Quick, a collection of comic strip poems called Brilliantly Ham-fisted, and the painted novel, The Wolf. Image Comics recently released his series, The Humans, a fantastic series about biker apes.

But he is best known for the cult-hit indie comic book Henry & Glenn Forever, which he created with his artist collective the Igloo Tornado.

Starring notorious muscle-bound punk/metal dudes Henry Rollins and Glenn Danzig (with a little help from soft rockers Hall and Oates), Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever is a love story to end all love stories. And here for the first time is the complete compiled collection of the graphic novel that details the fictitious romance of these real-life music icons. This tongue-in-cheek graphic novel satire is filled with adventure, subtle references, and humor, and the exhibition features dozens of pinup art and full-color covers from the original series along with many original comic art pages and new pieces inspired by Henry & Glenn.

The tender care Neely and a rotating cast of guest authors bring to the stories makes Forever and Ever so much more than a one-note gag — Glenn’s tantrums are risible; Henry’s patience is divine — and there are inside jokes galore for fans of heavy music. —Chris Martins, Spin

Coaster-Show2014

We’ve all done it. We’ve sat at the bar, drinking a beer and doodled on a coaster.

But most of us aren’t the extremely skilled painters, illustrators, animators, tattooists, sculptors or collage artists that are featured in this exhibition that takes a love of craft brewing and elevates it to high art.

The folks behind L.A. Beer Week produced a custom canvas for some of La Luz de Jesus’ favorite artists to do what they do best, and transform a 4″ tondo coaster into museum worthy exhibition pieces.

Last year, La Luz de Jesus dotted their walls with over 700 tiny masterpieces, and this year they are looking to outdo themselves. The rules are simple: Each coaster must be a solitary work (though it’s fine if several pieces work together contextually), and they must be priced $250 or less. There is no bottom, so some coasters might even be free!

This isn’t just the same, old crop of folks you see in every group show across town. There are a lot of participants who they quite frankly can’t believe they got to participate. Maybe it’s because they kept the rules simple: they told them to do whatever they wanted. Whether you love beer or don’t, the art will blow your mind.

And just like last year, there will be some amazing beer there, too!
