The AWP Conference & Bookfair is an essential annual destination for writers, teachers, students, editors, and publishers. Each year more than 12,000 attendees flock for four days of insightful dialogue, networking, and unrivaled access to the organizations and opinion-makers that matter most in contemporary literature. The 2015 conference featured over 2,000 presenters and 550 readings, panels, and craft lectures. The bookfair hosted over 800 presses, journals, and literary organizations from around the world. AWP’s is now the largest literary conference in North America.

Join us at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Wednesday, March 30th to celebrate the opening night with independent literary power houses Two Dollar Radio & McSweeney’s.

Two Dollar Radio was started in 2005 by Eric Obenauf and Eliza Wood-Obenauf, a young husband-and-wife team with no experience in publishing other than an intense love of books. Over the past 10 years, they’ve become one of the most trusted and acclaimed independent publishers in North America, and the only one to also produce films. Their books have been honored by the National Book Foundation, finalists for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, picked as “Editors’ Choice” selections by The New York Times Book Review, and made year-end best-of lists at O, The Oprah Magazine, National Public Radio, Slate, Salon, The Believer, and others. The Brooklyn Rail credits Two Dollar Radio with publishing “some of the finest works of contemporary fiction,” while The Los Angeles Times has said they provide the industry with “an air of possibility, the belief that the future was very much in play.” Publishing Perspectives dubbed Two Dollar Radio “a budding literary movement;” The Seattle Stranger envisioned them leading a “dream industry” out of the wreckage of corporate publishing.

McSweeney’s is a publishing company based in San Francisco. As well as operating a daily humor website, they also publish Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, the Believer, and an ever-growing selection of books under various imprints. The recipient of dozens of awards for its contributions to literature and publishing, McSweeney’s was named one of the country’s most innovative media companies for “proving the value of print publishing.” McSweeney’s has helped launch the careers of dozens of emerging writers, such as Philipp Meyer, Wells Tower, and Rebecca Curtis; it has also published the works of well-established authors such as Michael Chabon, Stephen King, David Foster Wallace, George Saunders, Michael Ian Black, Nick Hornby, and Joyce Carol Oates. The house has also published the work of musicians, critics and artists including David Byrne and Beck. They’ve also transitioned to a nonprofit in order to fund projects with the next great wave of writers and artist and we’ll be accepting $2 donations at the door to help with that.

Readings will be performed casually throughout the evening and we’ll have a collection of new publications on hand by each publisher with authors available to sign them.

Only books purchased here will qualify for signing.
